On May 29, 2026, a security researcher discovered a critical vulnerability in Zcash's Orchard privacy pool. A flaw, sitting undetected, in the code since May 2022, four years, quietly present through every audit, every upgrade, and every rally ZEC enjoyed in that period.

The scary part. This bug could have allowed an attacker to generate unlimited, undetectable counterfeit ZEC inside the shielded pool. The team, as soon as it was detected, moved fast. But the damage was done.

The market punished ZEC. The token crashed roughly 45% from above $600 to around $314, wiping more than $3 billion off its market cap.
