DC Volunteers Respond to Mental Health Crisis With Community Outreach
Image: https://www.globalnewslines.com/uploads/2026/06/1780577507.jpgWASHINGTON, DC - 4 June, 2026 - Americans recognized Mental Health Awareness Month throughout May and though the month is over, the need for practical resources for stress and emotional well-being is not. According to a Pew Research study [https://www.pewresearch.org/science/2026/04/07/roughly-a-third-of-young-adults-have-negative-views-of-their-mental-health/], roughly half of American adults under 30 say managing stress in their lives is a major challenge and one in three rate their mental health only fair or poor-higher than any older demographic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report in May declaring the country's youth to be in a mental health crisis. [https://www.cdc.gov/mental-health/about/what-cdc-is-doing.html]
In response, volunteers from the Hubbard Dianetics Foundation of Washington, DC joined a coordinated worldwide outreach, bringing mental health resources to communities across the city.
The outreach coincided with May as the anniversary month of the book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, by L. Ron Hubbard, first published in 1950. More than 75 years later, over 20 million copies of the book are in circulation as part of an international movement reaching 225 countries and territories. The word Dianetics is derived from the Greek dia meaning "through," and nous, "mind or soul" and means "what the mind is doing to the body."
Over the past week, volunteers reached out in DC at a locally famous community hub, Dupont Circle, offering Dianetics and its practical techniques for mental health. The volunteers gave free stress tests and answered questions so residents, students and families could discover more about the book and its approach that has helped readers address the source of stress, anxiety and unwanted emotions.
One visitor, a local businesswoman in her 30s, stopped by after recently experiencing the stress of losing her aunt. After taking a stress test, she spotted that this stress was ruining her life. She ended up buying the Dianetics audiobook to help her understand how to handle the grief and stress from losing her aunt. For volunteers, moments like that were the purpose of the outreach.
"I've helped as a volunteer in many different parts of the country and timeframes," said Heather Childs, a volunteer with the Hubbard Dianetics Foundation of Washington, DC. "People are reaching to get help now more than ever. For example, one guy told me he was going through a bad divorce. He tried all of these different things that didn't work. Dianetics gives answers that actually work. Dianetics gives people a practical way to understand the source of stress and tools they can use to take control of it."
The Washington, DC activity was part of a coordinated global Dianetics outreach involving volunteers in over 250 cities across 50 nations. From Los Angeles to London and New York to New Delhi, teams offered the book which is translated in 50 languages and extended invitations to local lectures and seminars.
