FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Anton Williams Holding Co. and GMNF Missions Launch Joint Research Forum on Ethnicity and Economics in 19th/20th Century America as it intersects with AWHC history.

KALAMAZOO / GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Anton Williams Holding Co. (AWHC) and GMNF Missions have officially announced a joint academic initiative, launching the research forum "Ethnicity and Economics in Early US History." This collaborative forum will investigate the complex intersections of race, class, and economic power in the antebellum, postbellum, Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras in the United States.
The inaugural forum is scheduled to take place on June 6, 2026, serving as a vital educational prelude to the upcoming Juneteenth national holiday by offering deep historical context on the economic structures surrounding emancipation.

A Unique Historical Focal Point
The forum's foundational research centers on Archie P. Williams (1843-1928), the mixed-race great-great-great-grandfather of holding company owner Anton Williams. Born a free person of color, Archie P. Williams was raised within the upper-class environment of the ultra-wealthy Williams family.

Historical documentation reveals a rare social dynamic for the era:
* Media & Legal Recognition: Period newspaper editors, postmasters, lawyers, and fellow planters explicitly grouped Archie P. Williams alongside contemporary white gentlemen.
* The 1855 Post Master Notice: Federal postal records show his inclusion with his white Williams family during an era when enslaved people faced legal bans on literacy.
* Asset Transfers: 1850s deeds by Wealthy Welsh David Percy Williams explicitly acknowledge the sonship of mix race Archie Percy Williams, transferring property, financial assets, and slave ownership to him.
* The 1859 Legislative Petition: D.P. Williams co-led a petition to the Mississippi Legislature that secured property rights and residency for select free Black individuals while others were removed.

The Influence of Elite Antebellum Planters
The forum will highlight how immense wealth could legally override systemic racial barriers of the 19th century. Archie's father, Welsh planter David Percy (D.P.) Williams, legally freed Archie's mother, Ellen before his son birth and raised Archie with the same status as his white half-brothers. This arrangement was fully supported by his extended white family-including the Williams, Bingaman, Minor, Surget, and Duncan families of Natchez, Mississippi, who ranked among the wealthiest individuals in the world at the time.

Navigating Historical Tensions
"Ethnicity and Economics in Early US History" will directly navigate the deep contradictions of the period:
* The Planter Paradox: While D.P. Williams was protective of his bi-racial son, he remained a staunch defender of slavery. He ranked in the top 0.1% of American slaveholders, owning over 300 enslaved people and at least six plantations exceeding 1,000 acres each.
* Class vs. Ethnicity: Archie P. Williams could pass for white and leveraged the advantages of the wealthy establishment. As a prominent postbellum employer, he funded Black schools and churches, yet faced public criticism from the local Black populace for enacting policies that protected the interests of the social and economic elite that aligned with his own interests.

A Multi-Generational Legacy
Both sponsoring organizations are directed by Anton Williams, a ninth-generation descendant of David Williams, who founded the family's first American enterprises in the 1760s. The family legacy transitioned from over 10,000 acres of timber, tobacco, and agriculture in Louisiana and Mississippi to modern operations. Today, Anton Williams continues these multi-generational operations with a commercial focus on real estate, timber, oil, gas, and trading.
