Cambridge Cleaning Company Answers: What Is the Difference

KCS Kitchener Cleaning Services, a family-owned residential and commercial cleaning company based in Cambridge, Ontario, has published a detailed guide answering one of the most common questions it receives from local business owners and homeowners: What is the actual difference between cleaning and commercial cleaning? (https://kitchenercleaningservice.ca/difference-between-cleaning-and-commercial-cleaning/).

The guide, now live on the KCS website, breaks down every major dimension where the two service categories differ. Scale. Equipment. Regulations. Scheduling. Pricing. Insurance. The answer is more significant than most people expect.
Residential cleaning is the routine upkeep of private homes using consumer-grade tools and flexible scheduling.

Commercial cleaning is a professional service category built for offices, retail stores, healthcare facilities, schools, and other business environments. It uses industrial-grade equipment, employs staff trained under WHMIS 2015 requirements, and operates within a framework of provincial occupational health and safety legislation and Health Canada chemical regulations.

The two services serve different purposes. Residential cleaning creates a comfortable, livable home. Commercial cleaning meets documented, repeatable sanitation standards in spaces where employees work, customers visit, and public health authorities may inspect.
The KCS guide walks through seven key differences between the two service types:

Scope and scale. A typical home runs 1,500 to 3,000 square feet with light daily traffic. Commercial spaces range from small offices to warehouses and corporate buildings spanning hundreds of thousands of square feet, with foot traffic that can reach hundreds or thousands of people per day.

Equipment. Residential cleaning uses household vacuums and store-bought cleaners. Commercial cleaning relies on industrial-grade vacuums with HEPA filtration, floor buffers, auto-scrubbers, carpet extractors, electrostatic sprayers, and DIN-registered disinfectants approved by Health Canada.

Regulations and training. Residential cleaning operates under no formal regulatory framework. Commercial cleaning falls under provincial OHS Acts, WHMIS 2015 hazard communication rules, and Health Canada product regulations. Staff receive documented training on chemical handling, PPE use, and equipment operation.

Frequency and scheduling. Residential cleaning runs on weekly or bi-weekly daytime appointments. Commercial cleaning typically happens after hours or overnight. Healthcare facilities and food service operations often require daily or multiple-times-daily service.

Pricing. Residential cleaning is priced per visit or per room, typically $100 to $400 CAD for a standard home. Commercial cleaning is priced per square foot or by hourly crew rate, running roughly $0.10 to $0.30 CAD per square foot for standard recurring office work.

Insurance. Commercial cleaning providers carry commercial general liability insurance, WSIB coverage, janitorial bonding, and sometimes umbrella policies. Independent residential cleaners vary widely in coverage, and many operate without business insurance of any kind.

How to decide. The guide includes a clear decision framework. If employees work in the space, clients visit, or the facility is subject to public health or Ministry of Labour inspections, commercial cleaning is the right fit. If the space is a private home under 3,000 square feet with no compliance requirements, residential cleaning handles it.
"A lot of people use the words cleaning and commercial cleaning interchangeably, and that creates real problems," said a spokesperson for KCS Kitchener Cleaning Services. "Businesses end up with uninsured residential cleaners who can't meet compliance requirements. Homeowners end up overpaying for commercial-grade capacity they don't need. The goal of this guide is to make the distinction clear so people can make the right call."
