2026 Texas Divorce Statistics: Eric M. Willie, P.C. Report

Austin, Texas - Eric M. Willie, a family law attorney in Austin, has compiled a new analysis of marriage and divorce trends across Texas, revealing a notable shift over the past 20 years. While the state's population has increased exponentially over the last two decades, the divorce rate among Texans has steadily declined. The Texas divorce stats, based on population data and custom statistical modeling, provide a clearer picture of how relationships and family structures in Texas have evolved in 20 years.

Texas has experienced significant population expansion from 2003 to 2023. In 2003, the state's population was approximately 22.1 million residents, but by 2023, that number had grown to an estimated 30,727,890, an increase of more than 8 million people. This growth throughout the state provides important context when examining Texas divorce trends over the years, as a larger population could naturally lead to higher total divorce numbers. However, the Texas divorce stats Eric M. Willie has found tell a different story.

Rather than relying solely on total divorce figures throughout the state in each year, the analysis focuses on divorce rates per 1,000 residents to account for population changes over the years. In 2003, Texas recorded approximately 3.8 divorces per 1,000 residents. By 2023, the divorce rate had declined to approximately 2.7 divorces per 1,000 residents. This shift in divorces in Texas indicates that, proportionally, fewer Texans are getting divorced today than they were twenty years ago.

Eric M. Willie also examined marriage trends in Texas to better understand how they connect with divorce patterns. Since marriages create the basis for potential divorces, changes in marriage rates in Texas can significantly influence overall divorce statistics.

To estimate the number of marriages and divorces from 2003 to 2023, publicly available population, marriage, and divorce data were analyzed and used. Marriage rates were calculated based on the number of marriages per 1,000 residents and then applied to the population totals for both 2003 and 2023. Divorce rates were also evaluated in relation to the population changes and compared to marriage rates to estimate the average percentage of marriages ending in divorce.

The analysis used the following data points:

*
Marriage Rates

*
2003: 7.5 marriages per 1,000 residents

*
2023: 5.9 marriages per 1,000 residents

*
Divorce Rates

*
2003: 3.8 divorces per 1,000 residents

*
2023: 2.7 divorces per 1,000 residents

By comparing the marriage and divorce rates, Eric M. Willie determined the proportion of marriages likely to end in divorce during each year. The results offer a deeper look at long-term trends in Texas:

*
In 2003, Texas recorded an estimated 165,750 marriages and approximately 83,995 divorces, meaning about 50.7% of marriages ended in divorce that year.

*
In 2023, the state saw an estimated 181,295 marriages and approximately 82,969 divorces, with about 45.8% of marriages ending in divorce that year.

Despite the substantial increase in population in Texas, the total number of divorces has remained relatively stable and has even declined slightly over the past 20 years. When looking at Texas divorce stats, they suggest that Texans are less likely to divorce on a per capita basis than they were in the early 2000s.

At the same time, marriage rates have also decreased over the years. While the total number of marriages rose modestly due to population growth in Texas over 20 years, the rate of marriage per 1,000 residents declined. This highlights that a smaller proportion of Texans are choosing to marry compared to twenty years ago.

The Texas marriage and divorce statistics compiled by Eric M. Willie also show a decline in the percentage of marriages ending in divorce. This trend over the years may reflect broader societal changes, including:

*
Evolving societal expectations around relationships

*
Financial considerations

*
Shifting cultural attitudes toward marriage

When looking at the downward trend of divorce and marriage statistics in 2023, it often makes people wonder why. Eric M. Willie found that several factors may be contributing to these changes in divorce rates over the years:

*
Delayed Marriage - Many individuals are choosing to marry later in life, often after achieving their education and career goals. Research has consistently shown that marriages that are entered at older ages tend to have lower divorce rates.

*
Economic Pressures - Financial realities such as rising housing costs, student loan debt, and childcare expenses can also influence both marriage and divorce rates. The financial burden of divorce itself may also lead some couples to remain married instead of getting divorced.

*
Cohabitation Trends - More couples are living together without marrying their significant other. When these relationships end, they are not reflected in divorce statistics, as they were never officially married. This may also contribute to lower recorded divorce rates.

*
Access to Support Services - Increased availability of counseling, therapy, and mediation services throughout Texas has also provided couples with more tools to work through challenges without ending their marriages.

*
Changing Cultural Perspectives - Marriage is no longer viewed as the only path to long-term partnership or family life. As social norms continue to change in Texas, both marriage and divorce patterns are changing as well.

*
Growth in Gray Divorce - While overall divorce rates have declined, divorces among older adults have increased. These cases often involve long-term marriages and more complex financial considerations.
