Craig Plescia of Morristown, New Jersey, is raising awareness of workforce shortages in construction and the growing need for mentorship and skilled-trade development.
Craig Plescia, Founder and CEO of Plescia Construction & Development, is encouraging more young professionals to consider careers in skilled trades and commercial construction as labor shortages continue to impact the industry nationwide.

According to industry data from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), the construction industry needs hundreds of thousands of additional workers to meet current demand. At the same time, many experienced professionals are reaching retirement age, creating growing pressure on the workforce pipeline.

Plescia believes the industry needs stronger mentorship, better exposure to career opportunities, and a renewed focus on skilled trades as long-term professions.

"Construction offers real opportunities for people who are willing to learn, work consistently, and take responsibility," said Plescia. "There are a lot of young people looking for direction, and this industry can provide strong long-term careers if they approach it seriously."

With more than 20 years of experience in commercial construction and construction management, Plescia has seen firsthand how workforce shortages affect project timelines, operational efficiency, and long-term industry growth.

"The demand for skilled workers is very real. Good people who can communicate, solve problems, and execute consistently are becoming harder to find."

Plescia says one of the biggest misconceptions about construction careers is that they offer limited growth potential. In reality, he believes the industry rewards discipline, adaptability, and leadership.

"A lot of people still overlook skilled trades and construction management as career paths, but there's significant opportunity here. You can build a stable career, develop leadership skills, and create long-term growth if you stay committed to learning and improving."

Beyond technical skills, Plescia emphasizes the importance of mentorship and operational habits. Early in his own career, he learned the value of structure, accountability, and consistency through both successes and mistakes.

"You don't build a career through motivation alone. You build it through routine, discipline, and execution over time."

He believes experienced professionals have a responsibility to help develop the next generation entering the workforce.

"Mentorship matters because younger professionals need exposure to real-world problem-solving, communication, and accountability. Those things are difficult to learn without hands-on experience."

Outside of business, Plescia also coaches youth rugby, where he sees many of the same leadership principles apply.

"Whether it's sports or construction, people grow through responsibility, consistency, and learning how to operate under pressure."

As technology and project complexity continue evolving in commercial construction, Plescia believes the industry will increasingly need adaptable professionals who can combine technical understanding with strong communication and operational discipline.

He also encourages young professionals to stay open-minded about career paths that may not follow traditional expectations.

"There are a lot of successful careers outside the conventional path people are pushed toward. Skilled trades and construction can create real opportunities for growth, stability, and long-term development."

Craig Plescia encourages students, parents, educators, and young professionals to learn more about skilled trades, construction management, and hands-on career opportunities by:

Talking with professionals working in the trades

*
Learning practical problem-solving and communication skills
