Why Europe's Energy Strategy Is Increasingly Exposing Its Industry to Geopolitical Shocks
Munich, May 22, 2026Europe's energy transition is increasingly coming into conflict with the realities of industrial competitiveness, geopolitical instability, and long-term energy dependence. In his new book SCHIEFER, Dr. Raphael Nagel (LL.M.) examines how the United States has transformed energy independence into geopolitical influence, while Europe has deepened structural vulnerabilities through import dependence and incomplete transformation planning.
The book argues that the global energy debate has never been exclusively a matter of climate policy or technology. According to Dr. Raphael Nagel (LL.M.), at its core, it has been about sovereignty, resilience, and the ability of states to cushion geopolitical shocks without destabilizing their economies. The analysis traces how the American shale gas revolution reshaped global power structures, while Europe, despite ambitious investments in renewable energy, further increased its dependence on imported energy.
As the book states: "Those who have energy have options. Those who must buy energy have obligations."
SCHIEFER describes how shale gas transformed the United States from the world's largest energy importer to a dominant energy exporter in less than two decades. The book contrasts this development with Europe's decision to ban or severely restrict domestic shale gas production while simultaneously increasing its dependence on imported LNG and pipeline gas. According to the analysis, this created a structural asymmetry that became fully apparent during global energy crises and geopolitical tensions.
The book also examines the strategic implications of European industrial energy costs. According to the analysis, rising energy prices are increasingly affecting industrial competitiveness, production relocations, and long-term investment decisions in Europe's industrial heartland. As the manuscript notes: "Energy is not the source of prosperity. It is its prerequisite."
The debate has gained further relevance following recent reports by Reuters on growing concerns regarding Europe's vulnerability to potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and broader instability in the Middle East. Analysts are increasingly warning that, due to its structural dependence on energy imports, Europe remains significantly more exposed to supply disruptions and LNG price shocks than the United States.
In his new book SCHIEFER, Dr. Raphael Nagel (LL.M.) argues that Europe's transformation strategy did not sufficiently account for the decades-long transition phase between fossil fuel dependence and the full implementation of renewable systems. The book does not oppose the expansion of renewable energy. Rather, it asks whether Europe underestimated the geopolitical risks of phasing out domestic energy options before viable replacement systems were fully secured.
"Europe wanted the right outcome. It simply misjudged the timing," the book states in its analysis of industrial policy and energy transition planning.
The publication also examines the long-term consequences of industrial decline, rising production costs, demographic pressures, and infrastructural dependencies. According to Dr. Raphael Nagel (LL.M.), energy policy increasingly influences labor markets, pension systems, industrial production, and strategic autonomy simultaneously. The book argues that the energy issue can no longer be separated from broader questions of economic resilience and geopolitical positioning.

Germany's Economic Decline Fuels Anti-Semitism
