College Textbooks Are Still a Burden for Thousands of Modern Students

Students search for ways to reduce their financial burden. A majority of respondents (66%) reported buying used copies of textbooks, and nearly half (48%) seek free digital online versions. Other popular cost-cutting strategies include shopping at off-campus bookstores and sharing materials with classmates.

The research also highlights some other related issues that should definitely be addressed:

Nearly 30% of students are worried about being able to afford course materials, which makes them doubtful about the idea of entering college or university.
31% of students spend more than $300 annually on course textbooks, which can be troublesome for the average family in the USA.

Rental services offer books for as low as $18, with options like Barnes & Noble and Chegg providing competitive pricing.
Used copies are usually 20-50% cheaper than new textbooks, which can cost around $100-$300, but the demand for them is very high, which drives students back to the first issue, worrying about extra expenses.

"Textbook costs are no longer a secondary expense but a persistent psychological and financial stressor for students,"
