Berlin Airlift Vets to Be Honored at ILA

Combat pilot, professor of political science, and author of THE UNHERALDED: MEN AND WOMEN OF THE BERLIN BLOCKADE AND AIRLIFT, Edwin Gere joins a handful of veterans who served in the Berlin Airlift to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary, May 27 through June 1 at the Berlin International Air Show—ILA at Schönefeld Airport. Gere is probably one of the most knowledgeable persons about the Airlift, bringing a personal and trained historical perspective to his remembrances. His book pays homage to the unheralded men and women who served in the Berlin Airlift and is based heavily on original research, over 200 veteran questionnaires, in-person interviews, and his personal experiences.

He flew 184 Berlin Airlift missions from Wiesbaden and Fassberg, and he later served at Tempelhof. With a doctorate in political science and over 65 professional publications, he taught for 35 years at the Universities of Connecticut and Massachusetts, and as guest professor at the Post-Graduate School of Administrative Sciences in Speyer, Germany.

He has been called upon as an expert commentator and opinion leader for local, national, and international broadcast news. In support of two international organizations committed to improving government administration in other (especially developing) nations, he has conducted seminars, chaired and participated in panel discussions worldwide. Edwin lives in Leverett, Massachusetts where he served for 22 years as town meeting moderator.
