AUCKLAND, New Zealand - International collaboration in gut health, microbiome science, and functional recovery continues to grow following the successful 2025 NZ-CN Gut Health & Functional Recovery Forum held in Auckland, New Zealand.
The forum brought together clinicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals from New Zealand and China to explore emerging developments in gut microbiota research, colorectal cancer, microbiome-related immune interactions, nutritional science, and integrative approaches to long-term wellbeing.
Experts participating in the forum represented institutions and organisations including Auckland University of Technology, University of Otago, Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center, Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and other leading academic and clinical centres across the Asia-Pacific region.
Forum presentations covered a wide range of topics related to microbiome science and functional health, including:
• gut microbiota and cancer immunology
• microbiome-guided therapeutic strategies
• gut-brain and gut-lung axis research
• translational colorectal cancer studies
• functional bowel disorders
• prebiotics and food-based nutritional interventions
• Māori and population health perspectives
The event reflected increasing international recognition of the gut microbiome as an important area of research influencing immunity, metabolism, chronic inflammation, digestive wellbeing, and broader systemic health.
Organisers noted that scientific and public interest in microbiome-based approaches has expanded rapidly in recent years, particularly in areas related to preventive health, dietary intervention, and long-term wellness strategies.
Discussions during the forum also highlighted growing interest in natural and whole-food-derived prebiotic approaches developed in New Zealand, including NZFOS+, as part of broader conversations surrounding microbiome diversity, dietary fibre intake, and digestive health support.
According to forum organisers, future healthcare discussions are expected to place increasing emphasis on ecosystem-based approaches to health, integrating nutrition science, microbiome research, lifestyle factors, and public health education.
The Auckland forum also established a foundation for ongoing collaboration between New Zealand and China in the fields of gut health, translational medicine, and functional recovery.
Preparations are currently underway for the second NZ-CN Gut Health & Functional Recovery Forum, scheduled to take place in Shanghai, China, in June 2026. The upcoming gathering is expected to further strengthen cross-border scientific dialogue and multidisciplinary collaboration involving clinicians, researchers, and public health professionals.
As interest in microbiome science continues to expand globally, the forum aims to support ongoing international exchange in areas related to digestive health, nutritional innovation, functional recovery, and future wellbeing strategies.
