RV Organica Launches Five Cosmetic Grade Mica Powders
Gold, silver, red, green and orange mineral mica pigments - now launching at rvorganica.com for soap makers, resin artists and cosmetic formulators across India. Pricing will go live at launch.Anyone who sells handmade soap or resin products knows the frustration of colour that doesn't hold. You photograph the batch on day one - it looks perfect. Six weeks later the customer's bar has turned a completely different shade, the photos are wrong, and you're answering complaints. That's a dye problem, not a product problem. Mineral oxide coated mica doesn't oxidise, doesn't bleed and doesn't shift shade over time. What you pour is what the customer gets, months later.
RV Organica is now stocking five cosmetic grade mica powders for the Indian market. The colours are gold, silver, red, green and orange. Every pigment in the range is built on a muscovite mica core with mineral oxide coatings applied through heat. Those coatings bond permanently to the particle surface and stay stable whether the end product sits in sunlight, gets exposed to varying pH, or gets used in high-temperature applications. Pricing details will be published at rvorganica.com when the range launches.
Where mica comes from and how colour gets added
Raw mica forms in metamorphic rock. Granite and schist are the most common sources. The mineral grows in thin sheets underground - translucent, slightly flexible, with a natural pearlescent quality. India pulls in more than half of total global output, with Bihar and Nellore as the main producing regions. After mining, it goes through washing and then milling - ball mill or jet mill - until the particle size is reduced to a fine white-grey powder. No colour at this stage.
Heating the powder with mineral oxides is what adds colour. At low concentrations, iron oxide turns the mica gold. Push the iron oxide loading up and that gold slides into red. Titanium dioxide goes on as silver - it bounces all wavelengths back at similar intensities, which is why the result has no colour cast. Green comes from chromium oxide, a pigment with a track record going back well over a hundred years in oil painting and ceramics because of how little it moves over time. For orange, RV Organica blends two oxides: yellow iron oxide (CI 77492) with red iron oxide (CI 77491). A blend that's heavier on yellow comes out as a clean warm orange. Heavier on red and it shifts into something darker, closer to burnt clay.
Synthetic oxides and why that matters
Every oxide used in the RV Organica range is synthetic rather than mined. That's not a marketing angle - it's about what ends up in the final product. Iron oxides taken directly from ore deposits carry trace contaminants. Arsenic, lead and mercury are all present in measurable quantities. When you're formulating something that ends up on someone's face, lips or eyes, trace contaminants become relevant. Starting with synthetic oxides means starting without those.
Synthetic and mined oxides share the same molecular structure and behave identically in formulations. The difference is purity. All five colours in the RV Organica range carry US FDA registration as cosmetic colour additives. They also clear the eye and lip safety standard - the one that governs products like eyeshadow, lip balm and anything else applied directly to the face. In India, the range sits within the regulatory framework of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. INCI documentation for every colour is on hand and provided free on request.
The five colours - how each one performs
Gold is the strongest seller by a wide margin. In cold process soap it goes in cleanly - no bleeding, no separation issues, saponifies without drama. Resin artists use it because the warmth and depth it creates in cured resin isn't something synthetic pigments can replicate. Candle makers reach for it, cosmetic formulators reach for it. It's one of those materials that consistently reads as premium regardless of what it's going into.
Silver is the neutral option. Titanium dioxide as a pigment has no inherent temperature - it isn't warm like gold or cool like some blues. Because it reflects the full visible spectrum without bias, it sits cleanly on top of any base and doesn't drag the formula in a direction you didn't intend. Even coverage, consistent shimmer, predictable results.
Red shares its base pigment with gold - iron oxide. The concentration on the mica particle is simply much higher, which is enough to take the warm amber tone of gold and turn it into a proper deep red.
Green is the most stable pigment in the range from a colour-permanence standpoint. Chromium oxide doesn't drift toward yellow in heat or blue in cold. It holds its position over time, which is exactly why formulators working on soap, skincare and cosmetics prefer it for any product that needs to look the same six months after production as it did on the day it was made.
Orange lands differently depending on the iron oxide ratio. More yellow oxide gives a bright, clean orange with warmth to it. More red oxide takes it toward a muted earthy tone. RV Organica stocks both variations.
Working with mica in different applications
Soap - the most common mistake is adding mica powder directly to the soap pot. Mix it into fragrance oil or glycerin first, just enough to turn it into a loose paste, and fold that in instead. Dry powder clumps on contact with the batter and creates uneven patches of colour that don't wash out during cure.
Resin - before touching the resin, wet the mica powder with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol and stir until it looks evenly saturated. Adding it to resin dry almost always produces streaking. The alcohol step takes ten seconds and makes a visible difference in how the colour disperses.
Cosmetics - no pre-mixing needed. Work the mica directly into thick bases using a spatula.
Candles - mica is denser than liquid wax and drops to the bottom of the mould while the wax is still molten. Two ways to handle this: put the powder in the mould before any wax goes in, or let the candle set fully and press the mica into the surface afterwards.
Nail art - the chrome effect comes entirely from how fine the particles are. RV Organica's cosmetic grade mica is milled down to 1,000 mesh or finer, which puts individual particles in the 1 to 40 micron range. At that size, pressed over a wet top coat with a silicone brush, the result looks metallic rather than glittery. Coarser mica at the same step just looks like very fine glitter.
Sizes, pricing and labelling
The range comes in four sizes - 25 grams, 100 grams, 250 grams and one kilogram. Launch pricing will be announced at rvorganica.com. A 25 gram bag is enough for three or four soap batches, or a good handful of resin projects - enough to actually test whether a colour works before scaling up. The price per gram drops meaningfully at 100 grams and above.
Sellers in India who label finished cosmetic products are required to use INCI names on ingredient lists. Writing 'mica powder' doesn't satisfy the requirement - each ingredient needs its correct CI number and chemical name. RV Organica puts together this documentation for every colour in the range and hands it over at no cost.
