The story begins on the one hundredth birthday of great-grandfather Bill, affectionately called Gramps, as twelve-year-old Lucy sits at his feet for what becomes the most astonishing tale he has ever told. On their thirteenth birthday, young Bill and his twin sister Annie follow a mysterious purple mist finger across a lake on their family farm, rowing through a festive archway into a world called Far-Ago Island.
There, they encounter Egnaro, a graceful island girl, and a strange and wonderful creature called a dumligo, a compact, horn-bearing animal with a snorting personality and a magical power that will prove essential to everything that follows.
Far-Ago Island is a land of dazzling colour, rainbow-feathered birds, purple grass, and a colossal World Tree, but it lives under the shadow of a cruel cyclops named Terominus, who rules its people through fear. With no knowledge of what lies ahead, Billy and Annie must draw on courage, loyalty, and trust in their extraordinary new companion to face a threat that no visitor from their world has ever survived.
The Magical Dumligo is a story about what two determined young people can accomplish when they stand together, and what it means to fight for people who cannot fight for themselves.
Larcombe-Lilford brings a distinct warmth and imagination to the children's fantasy genre. Written as a legacy to family, the novel frames its adventure within a deeply human moment: an old man reliving the greatest day of his life for the granddaughter who loves him.
