NEW YORK, NY - Just Focus, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to youth development through photography education, today announced the expansion of its community-based programs serving young people ages 10 to 18 across New York City. Under the leadership of founder and executive director George Kellman, Just Focus continues to bridge the digital divide and provide equitable access to arts education for underserved youth populations.
As a nonprofit organization committed to youth empowerment, creative arts education, and community impact, Just Focus operates in-person and virtual photography workshops, immersive learning experiences including metaverse and virtual reality (VR)-based curriculum, and community field trips designed to expose young people to real-world creative careers and professional pathways.
The organization's signature program, Through My Lens, is an annual gallery exhibition and community showcase that provides youth participants an opportunity to display their original photographic works to the public - offering a platform for youth voices, creative expression, and social-emotional development that is rarely accessible to underserved communities.
"Photography is more than a camera and a click - it's a language. We're teaching young people in New York City how to tell their own stories, see their communities through a new lens, and build skills that will follow them for a lifetime. Just Focus is a movement, not just a program."
- George Kellman, Founder & Executive Director, Just Focus
Just Focus is currently seeking $20,000 in charitable donations and equipment grants to fund camera equipment, digital learning infrastructure, and curriculum development for the upcoming program year. The fundraising campaign launches officially on May 1st at https://givebutter.com/we-have-more-students-than-cameras-ppfgid The organization actively pursues grant funding from foundations, government agencies, and corporate social responsibility programs aligned with youth development, STEAM education, creative arts, digital literacy, and community enrichment initiatives.
A Camera System Built for Every Student
Our program has grown and it is time our equipment matched that growth. We have done the research and built a two-tier camera system that puts the right tools in the right hands.
Ten Canon EOS R100 kits with wide and telephoto lenses for our younger students ages 10-14, who need an intuitive, lightweight system to build foundational skills. Ten Canon EOS R50 bodies for our older students ages 15-18, who are ready for a more advanced system to push their craft further.
Both cameras share the same RF-S lens mount, so lenses go further. Every dollar in this campaign goes directly to cameras, accessories, storage, and protection that will serve Just Focus students for years.
Now Online: Free Virtual Photography Classes
Just Focus has always met students where they are in community centers, at gallery walls, on field trips through the city. Now we're bringing that same energy to a screen near them.
We are currently beta-testing a free virtual learning program built on Framervr.io, an immersive platform that makes online learning feel nothing like a Zoom call. Students can join live instructor-led sessions or move through the material on their own time - whatever works for their schedule and their family.
The virtual classroom comes stocked with a growing library of photography PDFs, exercises, and guided projects. Foundational composition, light, storytelling through the lens - it is all there. Available to any student ages 10-18, no equipment required to get started.
The nonprofit is actively forming partnerships with school districts, community-based organizations (CBOs), and corporate sponsors - including brands in the photography, technology, and media industries - to expand program reach and deepen its impact across underserved New York City neighborhoods. Just Focus is an eligible recipient for federal, state, and city grant funding, including NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) grants, New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) funding, and other public and private philanthropic opportunities.
George Kellman brings a unique background in entrepreneurship, creative media, and community advocacy to his work leading Just Focus. As a mission-driven nonprofit founder, Kellman has built Just Focus into a recognized platform for youth arts education, youth mentorship, and youth philanthropy - drawing support from donors, volunteers, and community stakeholders committed to expanding opportunity for the next generation.
"Every young person deserves to see themselves reflected in the arts. Our goal is to make Just Focus the most impactful youth photography nonprofit in the country - and we're building the programs, the partnerships, and the community to make that happen."
- George Kellman, Founder & Executive Director, Just Focus
Just Focus is currently accepting inquiries from prospective donors, grant-making foundations, corporate sponsors, school partners, and volunteer mentors. Tax-deductible donations in support of youth arts education and creative development can be made directly at justfocus.org.
