New Study: Fewer Than Half of Top-Rated Pest Control Companies

Research covering 500 top-reviewed operators across more than 100 U.S. cities finds the companies that won Google are largely missing from AI search - opening a window for competitors to leapfrog established market leaders

April 24, 2026 - A new analysis of 500 top-rated pest control companies finds that fewer than half appear in ChatGPT when consumers search for pest control services in their area - a significant exposure gap emerging just as consumer reliance on AI for local business decisions accelerates sharply.

The research, conducted by Locals Rank, focused on the highest-reviewed pest control operators in each of more than 100 local markets - the companies that have earned dominant positions in Google search over years of building reviews and local reputation. Despite those established credentials, only 49.6% appeared in ChatGPT results. Just 30% were consistently visible across all three major AI platforms - ChatGPT, Google AI, and Claude. One in seven was entirely absent from AI search results across all platforms tested.

Among the invisible: at least one company carrying more than 4,300 customer reviews and a 4.9-star average rating scored zero out of 100 on AI visibility.

The findings come as consumer behavior is shifting toward AI at a pace that caught many industries off guard. According to recent consumer research, 45% of U.S. consumers now use AI tools for local business recommendations - up from just 6% in 2025. Nearly half (47%) used AI for a local search in the past month alone. AI has become the third most-used channel for local recommendations, now ranking ahead of platforms like Yelp and TripAdvisor.

The structural change driving this shift is significant. Consumers increasingly move from asking an AI a single question directly to a decision, bypassing the multi-site research process that defined local search for two decades. Between 40% and 55% of consumers now report making purchase decisions inside AI tools without visiting a business website. For pest control operators who have built their customer acquisition around Google rankings and review counts, that represents a fundamental change in how new customers find and choose a provider.

What makes the Locals Rank findings particularly consequential for established operators is that AI platforms do not rank businesses by Google reviews or local search position. AI tools pull from citations, structured data, and third-party mentions distributed across the web - a different set of signals from those that determine Google placement. That means a competitor with fewer reviews and a lower Google ranking can now appear ahead of a market leader in AI recommendations if it has built the right digital footprint.

The moat pest control operators spent years building on Google - reviews, map rankings, local SEO - does not automatically carry over. For the first time, a newer or smaller competitor can surface ahead of an established incumbent in front of AI-searching consumers without ever outranking them on Google. Early movers who close this gap now stand to capture disproportionate share of AI-driven demand as adoption continues to grow.

Additional findings from the study:

-AI-driven referral traffic, while still early in volume, shows meaningfully higher intent than traditional search traffic.
-Research from Adobe Analytics found AI search referrals grew more than 1,300% year-over-year, with AI-referred visitors generating 12% more pages per visit and a 23% lower bounce rate compared to traditional search visitors. Lower volume, higher intent - a pattern consistent with consumers who have already completed their evaluation before clicking.

-Consumer trust in AI for local decisions is still forming: 93% of users report verifying AI-generated recommendations before acting. That verification behavior reinforces rather than diminishes the importance of AI visibility - businesses that appear in the AI answer are the ones being verified and considered. Businesses that do not appear are not part of the process at all.

Methodology: Locals Rank analyzed 500 pest control businesses across more than 100 U.S. cities. Businesses were selected based on Google review standing in each local market. AI visibility was tested across five platforms including ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, Claude, Perplexity, and additional sources - using standardized local search queries. Public-facing results focus on the three platforms with the broadest consumer adoption: ChatGPT, Google AI, and Claude. Consumer behavior statistics are sourced from third-party research including studies by Rio SEO, YouTeach Agency, Yext, BrightLocal, and Adobe Analytics (2025-2026).
