Imran Khalid Usman is a civil engineer by profession and was politically active during the period of General Zia ul Haq's military rule in Pakistan. During that time, he was associated with the now defunct Pakistan Socialist Party led by C R Aslam and remained involved until the early 1990s. He holds a favorable view of Mikhail Gorbachev's reformist policies in the final years of the Soviet Union, while rejecting the notion that its dissolution was an inevitable historical outcome. At the same time, he firmly regards communism and socialism as obsolete systems in the context of the modern world.
