Study Shows: Nearly 60% of All Google Searches End Without a Click - Stuttgart SEO Expert Explains What Companies Need to Do Now
Recent data from international research institutes confirms a dramatic shift in search behavior: The majority of all Google searches no longer result in a website visit. This has far-reaching consequences for companies in the DACH region--especially since the launch of Google's AI features in Germany.
More and more Google users are finding their answers directly in the search results--and never click on a website. This phenomenon, known as "zero-click search," now affects nearly 60% of all Google searches worldwide, as recent studies by SparkToro, Semrush, and the Pew Research Center show. For Germany, the situation is further exacerbated: Since the introduction of Google's AI-powered AI Overviews in the DACH region in March 2025, the click-through rate on the top-ranked organic search result has plummeted by 59% according to SISTRIX--from 27% to just 11%.
"Many companies are investing heavily in their Google rankings without realizing that a top ranking today delivers only a fraction of the traffic it did two years ago," explains Dimitrios Nikolaidis, SEO Manager at Stuttgart-based ARISE Online Marketing GmbH. "In Germany alone, an estimated 265 million organic clicks per month are lost to AI Overviews. This is not some abstract future scenario--it's happening right now."
The reason: Google is answering more and more search queries directly on the results page--through Featured Snippets, Knowledge Panels, and, since 2025, increasingly through AI-generated summaries. Users receive complete answers without having to visit an external website. According to the Pew Research Center, in March 2025 only 8% of users clicked on a search result when an AI summary was displayed--compared to 15% without an AI summary.
According to SISTRIX data, the health, parenting, and DIY sectors are particularly affected. Specialized health portals are losing up to 30% of their organic clicks. Transactional areas such as e-commerce and travel bookings are less affected.
B2B companies are not spared either
Contrary to a widespread assumption, the zero-click trend is hitting the B2B sector particularly hard. According to Bain & Company, the click-through rate in B2B software categories has fallen by up to 30%. Entail AI even sees the sharpest decline across all industries in the B2B SaaS segment.
"This is especially true for B2B companies: those who produce only superficial informational content lose the most to AI summaries," says Nikolaidis. "On the other hand, those who invest in well-founded decision-making aids--case studies, technical comparisons, expert knowledge--remain indispensable. Ninety percent of B2B buyers continue to click through to verify information before making a purchase decision."
SEO remains the foundation
Despite these changes, Nikolaidis warns against writing off traditional search engine optimization: "SEO is by no means dead--on the contrary. Nearly half of all AI citations come from pages with strong organic rankings. SEO is the foundation upon which every GEO strategy is built. Those who neglect this foundation will not be recognized as a trustworthy source by AI systems either."
GEO--Generative Engine Optimization--refers to the strategic evolution of SEO for the AI era. The goal is to prepare content in such a way that AI systems like Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, or Perplexity recognize it as authoritative and cite it in their responses. According to recent surveys, only 53% of brands have implemented such a strategy so far.
