CITY-CAR acquires STARCAR's founding branch in Hamburg and expands its presence in Germany

CITY-CAR Car Rental continues to expand its market presence and, in light of current developments in the northern German car rental market, is taking over several former STARCAR locations.
The branches in Hamburg-Jenfeld, Hamburg-Bergedorf, Luebeck, Kiel, Braunschweig, and Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, will be integrated into the CITY-CAR network.

The branch in Hamburg-Jenfeld is of particular significance: It is considered the original founding branch of STARCAR and is thus historically closely linked to the company's development.
In addition to Jenfeld, the other locations in the Hamburg metropolitan region as well as in Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt will also be strategically strengthened. The goal is to secure established market positions, expand regional structures, and continue to offer customers reliable mobility solutions.

"In the current market situation, we see a responsibility toward employees, customers, and regional economic structures. Our aim is to sustainably develop existing locations and stabilize them in the long term," explains Managing Director Thomas Leuckfeld.

The acquired branches will remain open and will be integrated into the existing CITY-CAR system. The respective on-site teams will be retained; business operations will continue without interruption.

Market Environment
The acquisition is taking place in a market environment characterized by structural changes.
Industry analyses estimate annual revenue for the German car rental market to be in the low single-digit billion range. At the same time, the industry is under significant cost pressure--due, among other things, to rising vehicle prices, changed financing conditions, and regulatory requirements.

The German car rental market is characterized by several thousand locations and a fleet size in the high six-figure range. Following the pandemic-induced slump, demand has recovered significantly and is back at a stable level. At the same time, operating conditions have become more challenging: Vehicle acquisition costs have risen noticeably in recent years, as have financing costs due to higher interest rates.

Added to this are increased residual value risks and longer delivery times for new vehicles, which make fleet planning more complex. For rental companies, this means higher capital requirements per vehicle coupled with rising cost pressures.

The industry is responding with stricter fleet management, a greater emphasis on utilization rates, and a stronger focus on high-margin segments such as vans, long-term rentals, and commercial customer solutions. Regional providers with a clear cost structure and a strong local market presence can operate competitively in this environment, provided they manage their capacities efficiently.

Strategic Context
Against this backdrop, the integration of the locations in Hamburg-Jenfeld, Hamburg-Bergedorf, Luebeck, Kiel, Braunschweig, and Magdeburg is part of a long-term expansion strategy.
With this expansion, CITY-CAR is strengthening its presence in eastern Hamburg in particular, while also further expanding its supraregional market position in northern Germany. The offering continues to include passenger cars, vans, 7.5-ton trucks, long-term rentals for commercial customers, and replacement vehicles in the event of damage.
The strategic direction takes into account both the increasing electrification of vehicle fleets and the growing importance of flexible mobility models in the corporate and private customer segments. The integration of the locations is thus not only a step toward regional strengthening but also a business response to the structural changes in the German mobility market.
