A shell and tube flue gas heat exchanger is a type of recuperative heat exchanger designed to transfer thermal energy from high-temperature, often dirty and corrosive exhaust gas (flue gas) to a process fluid (like water, thermal oil, or air). Its core structure consists of a large cylindrical shell containing a bundle of tubes. The hot flue gas flows over the outside of the tube bundle (shell side), while the cooler process fluid flows inside the tubes, facilitating efficient heat transfer. It is a robust, reliable workhorse for waste heat recovery in heavy industries, engineered to handle thermal stress, fouling, and corrosion.

Floating Head Heat Exchangers have one tubesheet fixed and the other allowed to move ("float") within the shell, accommodating large thermal expansion and allowing the entire tube bundle to be removed for easy cleaning and maintenance, which is critical for fouling flue gas applications. This type is often the most complex and expensive.

Downstream Applications

These exchangers are essential in energy-intensive, high-heat industries. The Electric Power sector uses them in coal-fired and biomass plants for boiler feedwater preheating and combustion air preheating. The Iron and Steel industry employs them to recover waste heat from blast furnaces, coke oven gas, and reheating furnaces. The Coal industry utilizes them in coking and gasification processes. General industrial applications include cement kilns, chemical plants, and incinerators. The Others category encompasses waste-to-energy plants, refineries, and large marine engines, wherever high-temperature exhaust gas is available for energy recovery.
