When Do Germans Book Their Long-Haul Trips? New Analysis Reveals Clear Trends and Savings Opportunities

Anyone planning a long-haul trip will sooner or later ask themselves when the right time to book is. A recent analysis by long-haul travel expert TMC Reisen shows that Germans are booking their long-haul trips significantly earlier today than they did just a few years ago--especially for more complex and high-priced destinations.

Classic long-haul destinations such as the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Southern Africa--including South Africa and Namibia--are particularly in demand. For these destinations in particular, many travelers secure their dream trip as early as 9 to 12 months in advance.

This trend is even more pronounced in the South Pacific, particularly in French Polynesia. Here, it is evident that high-quality and limited travel products are often booked up extremely early. Expedition and supply ships such as the Aranui 5 or the new Aranoa, set to launch in 2027, are sometimes booked as far as 12 to 24 months in advance. Those who plan too late often have little to no choice left regarding dates or cabin categories.

A key reason for this trend lies in rising demand coupled with limited capacity. Especially for popular travel formats like RV trips or customized tours, vehicles, accommodations, and in-demand travel dates sell out quickly. Flights also become more expensive early on during high-demand periods (e.g., the start of school breaks) or are only available on a limited basis.

The analysis also shows a clear correlation between the time of booking and price trends. Early bookers generally benefit from better availability and more attractive terms, while last-minute bookings often come with higher costs. Prices sometimes rise significantly, particularly during holiday seasons or on highly sought-after travel dates.

"We have observed a clear shift toward significantly earlier bookings over the past few years. Especially for special travel experiences like South Sea cruises or RV trips, many dates are booked up well in advance. Those who decide early have the best selection and often the best prices," explains Uli Edelmann, Managing Director of TMC Reisen.

From the perspective of travel experts, the rule of thumb is therefore: If you want to remain flexible when it comes to long-haul travel, you should plan and book early. This not only helps optimize costs but also secures your desired dates and preferred travel services.
