April 6, 2026 - In many apartment buildings, it's a familiar sight: rows of shoes line up in front of apartment doors, strollers are parked next to oversized plant pots, and occasionally even art sculptures adorn the common hallway. What may seem to individuals like a practical extension of their living space or an expression of coziness, however, poses an incalculable risk to the building community in an emergency. Fire safety experts and the fire department strongly warn against misusing stairwells as storage areas, as these serve, under building codes, as the first and often only escape route to the outside.

From a fire safety perspective, the reasoning is clear: A stairwell must have a "fire load" of virtually zero. Many everyday items, particularly shoe cabinets made of wood or plastic as well as strollers with rubber tires, produce thick, highly toxic smoke within a very short time in the event of a fire. In a smoke-filled hallway, visibility often drops to just a few centimeters, meaning even a haphazard pile of shoes or a decorative flower pot can become dangerous tripping hazards. For firefighters, who must advance to rescue people while wearing breathing apparatus and in zero visibility, such obstacles can mean a critical loss of time. In addition, a clear passage width of over 1.25 meters must be permanently ensured in apartment buildings so that emergency responders can pass unhindered, even with stretchers.

The issue of liability is indeed a sensitive one: If residents are injured or even killed due to obstructed emergency exits, the focus shifts to allegations of negligent bodily injury or manslaughter. In such cases, insurance companies scrutinize very closely whether there is contributory negligence due to improperly placed objects. A positive appeal to the neighborhood can often be more effective here than simply referring to the house rules. Those who store their shoes inside their apartment and keep the stairwell clear are actively contributing to the protection of their own lives and those of their neighbors. Safety in the building is ultimately a shared responsibility that begins right at one's own front door.
