Skydiving Adventure and Skydiving Courses: What Actually Happens When You Jump
The first parachute jump from a moving aircraft happened in 1912, made by a US Army captain named Albert Berry over Missouri using a canvas-and-steel contraption that would look laughably primitive by modern standards. Parachuting spent the next few decades as a military discipline before recreational jumping began developing properly after the Second World War. Today there are over 6 million skydives made worldwide every year, around 250,000 of those in the UK alone. The equipment has changed beyond recognition. The fundamental appeal hasn't changed at all.● Tandem Skydiving Adventure
Most people's first skydiving adventure (https://adventuro.com/sport-type/skydiving/) is a tandem jump, and that's a sensible starting point. You're harnessed to a qualified instructor who manages the exit, the freefall, the parachute deployment, and the landing. Your job is to arch your back, breathe, and process what's happening around you - which is harder than it sounds when you're falling at roughly 120 miles per hour.
A jump from 15,000 feet gives around 60 seconds of freefall before the parachute opens at approximately 5,000 feet. The contrast between those two phases is one of the things that surprises first-timers most - the violent noise and physical sensation of freefall, then almost instant silence when the canopy opens and you spend several minutes drifting down with a view across the countryside. Most people describe the 24 hours after a first tandem jump as unusually calm. Something about the sensory reset seems to clear the noise out temporarily.
Tandem skydiving is available across the UK from dedicated drop zones including Hibaldstow in Lincolnshire - one of the largest in the country - through to centres in Scotland, Wales, and the southwest. The standard weight limit is around 15 stone for tandem jumps, and the minimum age is 16 with parental consent.
● The AFF Skydiving Course
For those who want to move beyond a tandem experience and actually learn to skydive, the route in the UK is through the Accelerated Freefall programme - AFF. This is the internationally recognised training system that takes a complete beginner to qualified solo skydiver, governed in the UK by British Skydiving.
The AFF skydiving course begins with a full day of ground training covering equipment familiarisation, body position in freefall, aircraft exit procedures, altimeter reading, parachute deployment, canopy control, and emergency procedures. After passing the written assessment at the end of the day, students make their first jump - from between 12,000 and 15,000 feet - accompanied by two instructors who hold on throughout the freefall phase, communicating via hand signals.
The course consists of eight levels. At each level, one additional skill or task is introduced and assessed before the student progresses. By Level 3, students are jumping with a single instructor rather than two. By Level 8, they exit and freefall independently. After completing all eight levels, a minimum of ten consolidation jumps are required before the British Skydiving A Licence is awarded - the qualification that allows unsupervised jumping at any affiliated drop zone in the world.
The AFF skydiving course can be completed in as little as a week for someone who commits full days at the drop zone and gets good weather. In practice, most people in the UK take longer due to the weather dependency - if you don't jump within a month of your last level, British Skydiving rules require you to repeat that level. Some people use wind tunnel sessions before or during their AFF course to build body position skills without weather dependency, which reduces the chance of level repeats.
● What Comes After
The A Licence is genuinely just the beginning. Formation skydiving - building geometric shapes with groups of people in freefall - is the most popular discipline. Canopy piloting, freeflying (where skydivers fly head-down or standing upright rather than in the traditional belly-to-earth position), and wingsuit flying are all progression routes from there. Wingsuit flying - where a specially designed suit creates lift and allows horizontal gliding across the sky - requires a minimum of 200 solo jumps before most drop zones will consider signing off a student for it.
The safety record across all of this has improved dramatically over the past 50 years. Automatic Activation Devices, now standard on virtually all sport parachutes, deploy a reserve parachute automatically if a skydiver fails to do so at a safe altitude - a technology credited with saving thousands of lives since its widespread adoption in the 1990s.
Adventuro lists skydiving adventures and AFF skydiving courses (https://adventuro.com/sport-type/skydiving/) across the UK at adventuro.com - a practical starting point for comparing locations and what's available before booking.
The door opens and you jump. Everything else follows from there.
