Donk Contest Announces Strategic Restructuring Ahead

The Texas Relays Donk Contest Car Show and Cultural Festival today announces a major restructuring initiative as it prepares for its 10-year anniversary since its move from Highland Mall, a defining moment in the event's history and cultural growth.

Founded and developed under the leadership of visionary entrepreneur Deykon Harris, the Donk Contest has long stood as a family-friendly, not-for-profit celebration of automotive creativity and community. Over the years, Deykon's commitment and exceptional ability to raise funds helped establish the event as a cornerstone of the culture.

As of this year, Deykon has stepped away from day-to-day involvement to focus on other life priorities. With his full support and blessing, Travis O'Connor will assume full operational leadership of the Donk Contest moving forward.

A New Chapter, Built with Purpose

"This milestone year gives us a moment to reflect, but also to evolve," said O'Connor. "We're incredibly grateful for everything that's been built to date, and we're committed to carrying that forward in a way that's sustainable for the future. We look forward to hosting it at a new venue this year the Rosewood Park in Austin on April 4, 2026."

In recent years, broader economic pressures have made traditional fundraising more challenging. Despite this, O'Connor has taken the step of personally funding the event through savings from his day job, ensuring that the Donk Contest remains as impactful and accessible as ever, albeit with a more disciplined approach to budgeting.

Introducing AI-Driven Efficiencies

To meet these challenges head-on, the Donk Contest is embracing modern tools and efficiencies, including the rollout of a new AI-powered judging system for the 2026 event.

Historically, the judging process has faced criticism around inconsistency and perceived favouritism. In response, O'Connor has introduced his implementation of the OpenClaw system, an AI-based assistant and framework designed to deliver a more transparent and standardised evaluation process.
Attendees and participants will be invited to submit event photos of cars to vote2026@donkcontest.com, where the system will:

• Assess vehicles based on predefined judging criteria
• Analyse multiple submissions of the same car to strengthen scoring accuracy
• Apply safeguards to prevent manipulation or coordinated bias

"This approach allows us to remove subjectivity while still celebrating the detail and individuality of each build," O'Connor noted.

In parallel, the event's media and marketing operations, previously handled by third-party agencies, will transition to a volunteer-led model supported by AI tools such as OpenClaw, significantly reducing overhead while maintaining quality and reach.

Reclaiming Ownership, Building Long-Term Value

Another key focus of the restructuring is the consolidation of the Donk Contest's digital and intellectual property.

In prior years, reliance on external freelancers and contractors resulted in fragmented ownership across websites, social media accounts, and other key assets, often limiting access or requiring ongoing fees for updates and control.
O'Connor is now initiating a targeted fundraising effort to reacquire these assets and bring them under a unified ownership structure.

"This is about more than operations, it's about stewardship," he said. "We're working to secure the foundation of the brand so it can grow properly into its next phase."

By reducing inefficiencies and reinvesting in core assets, the organisation aims to elevate both the cultural and commercial value of the Donk Contest, while staying true to its roots as a community-first event.
