The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to GTA Online

03-30-2026 08:20 PM CET | Business, Economy, Finances, Banking & Insurance

Press release from: Timedaily

GTA 5's online mode is still as lively as ever. And if you've been thinking of joining in on the fun in preparation for the very highly anticipated GTA 6, then there's no time like the present.

GTA Online has been getting a steady supply of content since its release, and it's still getting new modes and other goodies even to this day. In this article I will try to walk you through the basics of the game so that you don't feel lost from the sheer amount of activities you're able to do.

The first tip I can bestow upon you would be to get GTA money from a secure marketplace like this. https://playhub.com/gta-5/money Building up enough cash normally requires hours of grinding missions, running businesses like CEO offices or MC clubs, and repeating heists for decent payouts. This grind can feel pretty slow if you're eager to jump straight into buying high-end vehicles, weapon upgrades, and luxury properties. If you'd rather skip the heavy grind and enjoy the best content the game offers before GTA 6 releases, boosting your GTA$ balance can be a great shortcut.

First Steps in GTA Online: What Happens When You Start
Gone are the days in which you had to grind from the get-go to get your first business in GTA Online. Now there's a system called Career Builder that lets you get 4 million dollars and a pick between 4 enterprises.

Executive
Gunrunner
Nightclub owner
Biker

Now don't get too excited. 4 million sounds like a lot, but the harsh reality is that you'll be spending most of it before even starting the game.

After picking one of the options listed above, you will also have to pick a location, upgrades for your new business, vehicles, and weapons. Each of these takes a varying amount of this starting money.

By the time you're done setting up, you might have around a million of that GTA 5 money left.

Each of these businesses has different bonuses, but it's not worth it to overthink it. Sooner or later you will probably have a few of these unlocked.

Learning the Map (Your Most Important Tool)
Now, once you get into the open world, you will notice the map filling with lots and lots of icons, letters, and symbols. You will find that even your phone goes off at random intervals as random characters tell you about different activities to do.

This open-world map is the hub where you pick from all the activities within the game.

Different icons represent races, missions, businesses, heists, special events, and properties.

If you don't feel like driving up to these icons, your handy phone can be used to quickly join in on someone else's activities or missions. You can also use it to:
Buy vehicles
Purchase properties https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2a1x97F_vc
Access the internet

It does feel like a lot at first, but after a few hours, most of this will become second nature.

Understanding RP and Leveling Up

When you look at your GTA Online account, you will notice two very prominent numbers. Your GTA 5 money and your RP.

RP stands for Reputation Points, and it's basically this game's version of what other games would call EXP. By getting more RP, you unlock new weapons, vehicles, and equipment to buy, as well as other special features.

Earning experience can be done by basically interacting with the game in any way.

Completing missions
Winning races
Robbing stores
Evading police
Finishing heists
Completing daily objectives

Basically, as long as you're not AFK in the game, you're doing something that's earning you some RP.

Choosing Your First Business

Now that we've got the essentials out of the way, we can talk about businesses more. Businesses are where the real money starts coming in. Missions and other multiplayer modes help a lot, but businesses represent a steady income of money that shouldn't be overlooked.

Some good examples of beginner-friendly businesses are:

Nightclub
Nightclub is probably the most flashy of the businesses. It generates passive income, meaning you get money just by owning it.

Just doing the occasional promotion mission will increase your popularity, and you'll see the money pouring in.

Bunker (Gunrunning)

The bunker is all about the manufacture and selling of weapons. You have to purchase supplies to convert them into products.

Be careful, however, as other players can attack your bunker at during selling missions. Having your guards well equipped and upgraded is highly recommended.

Agency

These unlock thrilling missions featuring beloved characters from the main story, and they also provide passive income.

Missions and Heists: Where the Real Fun Begins

I think it would be a safe bet to say that heists are the highlight of the game for most players.

These are multi-stage missions where you set up and eventually perform a huge heist that feels like it was pulled right out of a crime movie. All of the game's systems shine through these missions. From planning, stealth, car chases, teamwork, and action like you wouldn't believe.

Heists require some money to be invested by the main player behind the heist, after which a series of missions will take place leading up to the final mission being the heist itself.

All in all, these missions are, in my opinion, the most satisfying in the game by far.

Vehicles Matter More Than You Think

Trust me, I know that trying to get the flashiest car available is very tempting, but in GTA Online, function often beats style.

For beginners, you want vehicles that help you complete missions efficiently.

A few popular early choices include:
Armored vehicles https://gta.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Armored_vehicles for protection
Fast sports cars for races
Utility vehicles for business missions

A good car can literally save your life during missions. Bullets start flying quickly in Los Santos.

And once you have the money?

Then you can start building that dream garage.

Playing Solo vs. Playing With Friends

This game is completely playable by yourself with no need for help. That doesn't mean that the experience doesn't drastically improve by just getting a couple of friends to join you.

Some players treat it like a solo open-world game.

Others treat it like a cooperative sandbox.

Both approaches work.

Playing with friends does have advantages, though:

Missions become easier
Heists require teams
You earn bonus RP when playing together

Joining a crew can also help. Crews are basically organized groups of players who regularly run missions and businesses together.

Plus... it's just more fun causing chaos with friends.

Weekly Events and Bonuses
Rockstar regularly refreshes GTA Online with weekly events and bonuses.

These events can include:
Double GTA$ rewards
Double RP
Discounts on vehicles
Special missions

If you're trying to make money fast, always check the weekly bonuses before grinding missions.

Sometimes a normally average activity suddenly becomes the most profitable thing in the game.

The Long-Term Goal: Build Your Empire
The magic of GTA Online is how it evolves over time.

What starts as small jobs slowly grows into something much bigger.

Eventually you might own:
Multiple businesses
High-end apartments
Supercars
Aircraft
Submarines
Nightclubs
Corporate offices

Each piece adds another layer to your criminal empire.

And the funny thing is... even after hundreds of hours, players still find new things to do.

FAQs

Can you play GTA Online solo?

Yes. Many missions and activities can be done alone, including the Cayo Perico Heist. Although, it's not recommended.

What's the best way to make money?
Try joining other people's heists or looking up weekly events that might give double money. Otherwise, you might want to try giving yourself a boost.

What should new players buy first?
A reliable vehicle and a business property are the best early investments.

How often does the game update?
Rockstar Games releases weekly events and occasional larger updates with new content.

Final Thoughts
Your first few hours might feel messy. Mine sure were.

But once you start running missions, building businesses, and upgrading your equipment, things begin to click.

Before you know it, you're not just surviving in Los Santos.

You're thriving there.

And honestly?

That's when GTA Online becomes really fun.
