Oil Paintings Exhibition by Margarita Reyes & Albert Halac

Their paintings emerge from journeys across cultures, landscapes, and human encounters that gradually reveal an unexpected truth: what first appears different often reflects something deeply familiar. Through observation, reflection, and painting, the artists explore how encounters with others reshape perceptions and quietly transform identities. Each work becomes both document and dialogue - and a reminder that, in recognizing differences, we also recognize ourselves.
Mi camino hacia el arte no se inició en un estudio, sino en el movimiento: a través de lugares, culturas y encuentros que, poco a poco, fueron reconfigurando mi manera de ver el mundo y a mí mismo.
Durante muchos años, creí que era yo quien observaba a los demás. Solo más tarde comprendí que, en cada encuentro, yo también estaba siendo observado: medido, reflejado y silenciosamente transformado. Lo que al principio parecía mera diferencia reveló gradualmente algo más complejo: una familiaridad que se resistía a una explicación sencilla.
En mi recorrido por el Río Dulce de Guatemala -que fluye desde el lago de Izabal hasta el mar Caribe- encontré el recuerdo más perdurable de uno de esos viajes. María, una joven guatemalteca ladina, maestra, viajaba hacia la jungla en el interior del país para enseñar a leer a los niños mayas de la comunidad Q'eqchi'. Recuerdo su presencia con mas nitidez que el propio paisaje. Y ahora, sentado ante este escritorio, me encuentro regresando a aquel encuentro: ella prosigue con su labor, abriendo una ventana al mundo para esos niños, mientras yo intento -a mi propia manera- dar sentido a lo que he visto.
The exhibition will be held at the Reston Community Center Hunters Woods from May 20th, 2026, through July 6, 2026. The event is open to the public.
Opening Reception
On May 31st, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Margarita and Albert will host a reception to greet visitors and talk about their journeys and experiences.
