Dr. Ozan Ozerk Explains Stablecoins' Growing Significance in the Future of Global Finance
Fintech entrepreneur Dr Ozan Ozerk has outlined how stablecoins are beginning to play a larger role in discussions about the future of global financial infrastructure, as banks, payment providers and regulators explore new approaches to digital payments and settlement systems.Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a stable value by being linked to an underlying asset, most commonly a major currency such as the US dollar or euro. Their design combines price stability with the operational speed of blockchain networks, allowing transactions to be processed quickly and continuously across international markets.
Dr Ozerk explains that stablecoins were initially developed within the cryptocurrency sector and were primarily used by traders as a way to move value between digital assets. Over time, however, financial institutions have begun to consider whether the same technology could be applied to broader financial services, particularly payments.
One reason for this growing interest is the structure of traditional cross-border payment systems. International transfers often involve several financial institutions and clearing systems before reaching their final destination. This layered structure can lead to delays and additional costs, especially when payments move between different jurisdictions.
According to Dr Ozerk, blockchain-based settlement mechanisms offer a different model. Transactions recorded on distributed networks can be processed directly between participants and verified in near real time, potentially reducing the number of intermediaries required in the process.
The possibility of faster settlement has attracted attention from banks, fintech companies, and payment providers seeking ways to improve the efficiency of international transfers. In addition to speed, stablecoins can operate continuously on blockchain networks, enabling payments to be processed at any time rather than within the operating hours of traditional banking systems.
Dr Ozerk also notes that the conversation surrounding stablecoins has evolved significantly in recent years. Early discussions often focused on whether these digital assets would remain limited to cryptocurrency markets. Increasingly, however, policymakers and financial institutions are examining how stablecoins might function within established financial systems.
Regulatory authorities across several major financial centres are currently working to define how stablecoins should be supervised. These discussions typically focus on areas such as reserve backing, transparency, risk management and consumer protection.
Dr Ozerk believes that regulatory clarity will be essential in determining the long-term role of stablecoins. Clear rules could provide the certainty needed for financial institutions to explore stablecoin-based payment models while maintaining trust and stability within the financial system.
The analysis also highlights the importance of cooperation among financial institutions, technology developers, and regulators as stablecoin frameworks continue to evolve. Collaboration across these groups may help ensure that emerging digital payment tools operate safely and remain compatible with existing banking infrastructure.
Rather than replacing traditional financial institutions, Dr Ozerk suggests that stablecoins may ultimately function as an additional layer within the global payments ecosystem, supporting faster and more flexible settlement between markets.
