How AI Is Changing the Way Global Brands Enter China's Consumer Market

As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms global marketing, international brands looking to enter China are discovering that technology is reshaping not only how consumers shop, but how companies themselves enter the market.

China is now one of the most digitally advanced consumer economies in the world. According to the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), the country had more than 1.09 billion internet users in 2024, while mobile internet penetration exceeded 99% of total users.

At the same time, social commerce and algorithm-driven discovery have become central to how Chinese consumers interact with brands online.

"China's digital ecosystem operates very differently from Western markets," said Ann Zhu, from London-based cross-border marketing consultancy Gogetop Marketing. "Artificial intelligence is accelerating this shift, especially in how consumers discover products and how brands build trust."

Industry analysts say three technology trends are reshaping how overseas companies enter China's consumer economy.

Algorithm-Driven Discovery

Unlike Western markets where search engines remain dominant, Chinese consumers increasingly discover brands through algorithm-driven platforms.

Apps such as Douyin, RedNote (Xiaohongshu) and Kuaishou rely heavily on recommendation algorithms that promote products based on user behaviour, interests and social interactions.

According to QuestMobile, short-form video platforms alone reach more than 900 million Chinese users, making them one of the largest discovery channels for new brands.

"Traditional marketing strategies that rely heavily on search or display advertising often do not translate directly into China," Zhu said. "Success depends on understanding how recommendation algorithms distribute content and influence purchasing decisions."

Social Commerce at Scale

Another defining feature of China's digital economy is the scale of social commerce.

Platforms such as Douyin, Taobao Live and WeChat Channels integrate livestreaming, content and direct purchasing within the same ecosystem.

Research from eMarketer suggests that more than 50% of China's online retail sales now involve social commerce elements, significantly higher than in most Western markets.

"Consumers in China often move seamlessly from content to purchase," Zhu said. "That creates enormous opportunities for brands, but it also means companies need entirely different marketing strategies."

AI and Data-Led Market Entry

Artificial intelligence is also changing how companies themselves approach market entry.

Brands increasingly rely on AI-driven analytics, consumer data insights and platform intelligence tools to understand emerging consumer trends before launching products.

"Data analysis is becoming central to international market entry," Zhu said. "AI allows companies to test messaging, analyse consumer behaviour and optimise campaigns far more quickly than traditional methods."

For global companies, the speed of China's digital transformation presents both opportunity and challenge.

"China's consumer market moves extraordinarily quickly," Zhu said. "Companies that succeed are those that understand the country's digital infrastructure, social platforms and data-driven marketing culture."
