Connecticut Crash Trend Analysis Highlights Persistent Highway Safety Risks on I-95, Merritt Parkway, Route 8/25 Near Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, CT - Feb 17, 2026 - The latest in a string of traffic incidents and crash data, indicate an ongoing threat to safety on several key travel corridors in the area surrounding Bridgeport (I-95, the Merritt Parkway, Rtes. 8/25), and raise new concerns regarding volume traffic, distraction and serious accidents.
Data collected by the Connecticut Crash Data Repository report that there were thousands of vehicle accident claims made against insurance companies each year in Bridgeport. A large number of those occurred along I-95 and nearby highways. During the year 2024, Bridgeport experienced more than 5,500 auto accidents which contributed to a growing trend of serious vehicle accidents that threaten safe travel conditions for commuters, and longer emergency response time for responders.
In the past few months, local authorities and the DOT issued numerous traffic alerts indicating traffic jams due to multi-car accidents resulting in lane closures, and at least one injury on the Merritt Parkway - all pointing out the recurring hazards associated with traveling on these roads.
"These major transportation routes are crucial to the regional economy and the daily commute, yet represent difficult-to-overcome safety problems," said Raymond W. Ganim, personal injury lawyer and founder of Ganim Personal Injury Law [https://ganimlaw.com/]. "Not only do we see numerous crashes, but serious accidents occur from driver distractions, excessive speeds and close spacing of vehicles."
Safety experts and law enforcement point to recent crash statistics as examples of larger concerns relative to unsafe motorist behavior that contributes to fatal and serious vehicle collisions. Connecticut experienced its share of fatal vehicle accidents in recent reporting periods, resulting in serious consequences to families and the public's health system.
"Each car wreck on I-95 or the Merritt Parkway creates a chain reaction effect - delayed emergency service response, congested traffic, and in far too many instances, lengthy physical, emotional and economic impacts upon the victim and his/her family," said Ganim. "Understanding what is happening with respect to the frequency of traffic wrecks and responsible driving habits will significantly aid in reducing avoidable damage."
Recent Connecticut traffic statistics note that there were more than 98,000 automobile accidents statewide during 2024, with more than 200 fatalities. Automobile accidents involving rear-end, high-speed, and distracted drivers remain some of the most common forms of accidents being reported.
Planners and safety advocates continue to promote increased enforcement of safety laws and regulations, improved highway designs and increased public awareness campaigns as part of the effort to continually decrease the number of accidents on major corridors. The public is encouraged to seek information on current traffic conditions via official state police and Department of Transportation traffic advisories.
"Awareness and educated driving will contribute to improving traffic safety outcomes," Ganim concluded. "We support initiatives to increase public awareness and enforcement that protects all roadway users."
