Skin and coat care, parasite prevention, and, if necessary, a certain amount of conditioning: when spring is on the horizon, Boerboels can benefit from a few measures taken by their owners. Although this breed of dog is strong and weather-resistant, beneath this tough exterior lies an animal that still has its sensitive sides.

On our extensive estate, the Boerboels we breed grow up close to nature. We at Boerboelz therefore know what the change of seasons means for South African farm dogs, as we have been dealing with it firsthand for over thirty years. First of all, it doesn't take a lot of effort to get through spring in good health. All you need to do is follow the advice below.

Coat care in spring - what the Boerboel needs now In his 2022 standard work "The Breed Identity of the Boerboel," Johan Swart aptly and succinctly describes the coat of these animals: "The coat is short and dense." It is short and thick, lies close to the body, and requires little care. This robust mastiff-type dog sheds moderately throughout the year and then sheds significantly more fur in spring: the typical coat change. Our tips: . Brushing: Brush daily in spring, preferably with a special cleaning glove, which gently removes loose hair, pollen, and dirt thanks to its nubbed structure.

. Care spray: After brushing, you can apply a special coat care spray, for example with soothing aloe, and then wipe it off carefully - this helps prevent skin irritation and excessive hair flying around the house. . Bathing? No frequent bathing! Otherwise, the skin may dry out, which can lead to itching and redness.

No further measures are necessary, especially no shearing or trimming. In this respect, Boerboels are very undemanding.

Skin care and allergy prevention for Boerboels in spring Unfortunately, the beautiful spring season is also peak season for pollen, grasses, and mold spores. Many large dog breeds, sometimes including Boerboels, react to this with skin irritation, which causes unpleasant itching, mainly on the belly, armpits, and paws. That's why brushing makes perfect sense for skin care. After walks in nature, you can also gently rinse the sensitive areas with clean, lukewarm water. Wet skin should then be dried thoroughly, either with a soft towel or a hair dryer set to "cool." And what about sun protection for hairless skin?

We can also consult Johan Swart's book on this question: "However, if breeders had based their claims on scientific evidence that - apart from skin disease - no scientific evidence of any harm to the offspring of dilute dogs had ever been found, they might have had a valid argument."

Dilute dogs are animals with "diluted colors," i.e., lighter skin and lighter fur. According to the breeding standard, however, Boerboels have dark skin pigmentation for good reason. Swart already implies why in his sentence: to protect against skin diseases. The AKC (American Kennel Club) writes on its website that dark skin, especially on the belly and around the mouth, serves as sun protection: a trait that is absolutely necessary in the Boerboel's country of origin, South Africa, and also useful in the German spring.

Long story short: sunscreen for dogs is available, but it is not absolutely necessary for this breed. Protection against ticks, fleas, and other parasites - a "must" from March onwards Ears, armpits, neck, belly, and back of the knees: these are the favorite places for ticks, which are in high season from March onwards at the latest. Fleas also like to hide in these areas. Both parasites can transmit diseases, but they can also simply be annoying and unpleasant. Take timely precautions for your Boerboel in spring with a spot-on treatment, tablets, or a flea collar. Check your large, loyal friend thoroughly for parasites on a regular basis and, if possible, avoid long grass and undergrowth with him.

How is your dog's fitness? Joint-friendly fitness is required In winter, many dogs get significantly less exercise. If your Boerboel has become a couch surfer during the cold season, you should now slowly get them back into shape in a way that is gentle on their joints. Gradually increase the duration of your walks and playtimes - and remember that swimming is particularly good for gently building up fitness. Massages and physiotherapy can be extremely beneficial for muscle stiffness, both for two-legged and four-legged creatures. However, Boerboels should also spend a lot of time outdoors in winter and be able to roam their territory behind a secure fence.

Food and drink - spring plays a role here too During the coat change, a dog's body often gets out of balance, which can affect digestion. Easily digestible dog food is particularly important during this phase, preferably with the addition of psyllium husks and prebiotics. The same applies to the first really warm or even hot days. Also, make sure to provide fresh, cool drinking water regularly. On warm days, you should change the water twice a day to keep it palatable and properly refresh your dog. Food recommendation for the Boerboel - not only in spring Puro dog food is healthy, nutritious, and naturally cold-pressed. A high meat content, premium-quality raw materials, and attractive prices have always been a matter of course for this traditional Dutch family business. Since 1887, dogs have been able to enjoy pure health with Puro, including the "Sensitive" variety with a light single-protein recipe. Just try it - and see for yourself how delicious it is!

Alternatively, Reico distribution partner Vital Hundefutter offers other tried-and-tested, healthy foods that will make your Boerboel happy. And if you're looking for a little more happiness for yourself, we also have Finnegan Events, the event service with a complete range of services for any small or large celebration. After all, spring is the time to let your inner zest for life shine through!

What distinguishes the Boerboel from other dog breeds?
The short answer to this question is: its origins. No single breeder or group of breeders created the Boerboel as their "own work." It is a centuries-old breed, descended from ancestors whose physiognomy and characteristics are now extinct and forgotten. No one can reconstruct this pedigree, and many attempts to do so have already proven to be a dead end. Boerboel expert Johan Swart reports on the results of his ten
