Every Premise Must Have a Designated Dog Feeding Space

As governments and civic bodies across India work on refining dog management and public safety policies, one foundational requirement is still missing from the conversation: every residential and commercial premise must have a designated dog feeding space. This is not a matter of sentiment, but one of science, urban ecology, and risk management.

Scientific studies and long-standing animal control data show that community dogs are territorial animals, typically operating within a limited radius of 100 to 300 meters in dense urban settings. When food sources are stable and predictable within this territory, dogs remain calm, non-aggressive, and non-roaming. Conversely, when feeding is abruptly stopped or pushed far outside this range, dogs are forced to wander in search of food, leading to increased stress, scavenging, territorial fights, and higher chances of human-dog conflict.

From a public safety perspective, local, regulated feeding reduces risk rather than increases it. Feeding zones located within the same premises or immediately adjacent areas (ideally 30-50 meters away from main entrances, lifts, and children's play zones) keep dogs settled in predictable locations while avoiding sensitive human spaces. This reduces roaming, barking, and unexpected encounters, directly improving safety for residents, children, and senior citizens.

Designating feeding zones at long distances-such as several kilometers away-is biologically impractical and counterproductive. Dogs do not travel such distances daily for food. Policies that push feeding too far away increase road accidents, hunger-related aggression, disease vulnerability, and population instability. Such displacement also weakens vaccination and sterilisation programs, as roaming dogs become difficult to track and monitor.

Importantly, a designated feeding zone does not mean unrestricted feeding. It enables regulation: fixed locations, fixed timings, cleanliness protocols, and accountability. Clear distance-based planning prevents random feeding across premises and significantly reduces friction between residents with differing views.

As policy discussions move forward, the emphasis must shift toward preventive urban design, not reactive enforcement. Just as cities plan waste zones, parking areas, and utility spaces, dog feeding zones should be treated as essential urban infrastructure, placed within scientifically appropriate distances.

If the objective is fewer conflicts, fewer bites, better disease control, and safer neighborhoods, the solution is clear: every premise must responsibly designate a dog feeding space within a practical territorial radius. Science, data, and global best practices consistently support this approach.
