Bhutan Launches Digital Nomad Residence Programme Through Gelephu Mindfulness City and NomadClub
The Royal Government of Bhutan has announced the launch of a Digital Nomad Residence Programme, marking a step in the country's international positioning as a jurisdiction open to global talent, innovation, and long-term sustainable engagement.
The programme is implemented within Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a special administrative region established as a future-oriented economic and innovation hub, in partnership with NomadClub and under the oversight of the Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority.
The Digital Nomad Residence Programme provides foreign professionals with a 12-month renewable residence permit, extendable up to 24 months. Participants are permitted to reside and travel freely throughout the Kingdom of Bhutan while conducting location-independent professional activity.
The initiative is aimed at digital nomads, entrepreneurs, and remote professionals whose work aligns with the principles of sustainable development, mindful living, and future-ready economic systems promoted within Gelephu Mindfulness City.
Participation in the programme requires payment of an annual programme fee of USD 2,800. Applicants are also required to open a local account with DK Bank and maintain a minimum balance equivalent to USD 10,000 in TER, a gold-backed digital asset used within the Gelephu Mindfulness City ecosystem. No fixed minimum income threshold has been introduced.
The program includes a structured onboarding process that covers eligibility assessment, financial participation, and the issuance of official residence documentation. It operates within Bhutan's regulatory framework.
The Digital Nomad Residence Program is a component of Bhutan's larger national strategy to establish Gelephu Mindfulness City as a long-term hub for international cooperation, responsible economic development, and cross-border capital and knowledge exchange.
