Munich, December 16, 2025. The recall of certain blood glucose meters manufactured by Abbott has led to the first documented case of serious health damage in Germany. A type I diabetes patient suffered a diabetic coma with multiple organ failure after receiving faulty readings from a FreeStyle sensor. Patientenanwalt AG, based in Munich, has taken on the legal representation. According to the law firm, the sensor displayed incorrect glucose values over several days without issuing a warning message. The patient relied on the values displayed and made treatment decisions based on them. In fact, he was suffering from severe hyperglycemia; a blood sugar level of around 1200 mg/dl was detected in the hospital. This was followed by weeks of intensive care, artificial coma, sepsis, permanent dialysis, and severe permanent neurological damage.

Abbott had previously acknowledged in a safety notice that certain FreeStyle sensors could provide incorrect readings, posing significant health risks. In the opinion of Patientenanwalt AG, this case shows that these risks are not just theoretical. "A vital medical device must function reliably," explains attorney Christian Zierhut, CEO of Patientenanwalt AG. "If a sensor displays incorrect values without recognizing or reporting this, it is potentially life-threatening for patients." The patient affected is now permanently in need of care and completely dependent on outside help. The law firm assumes that there is a clear product defect and considers compensation for pain and suffering of at least EUR400,000 to be appropriate. In addition, extensive care and follow-up costs are to be reimbursed. Patientenanwalt AG is currently preparing a bundled legal enforcement of the claims of other affected parties in the form of a class action lawsuit. Patients who have used Abbott FreeStyle sensors and who have experienced incorrect measurements or health impairments can have their claims reviewed.

DDR-Defective Tumors Market New Product Development & Latest Trends
Introduction DNA Damage Response (DDR) pathways are critical for maintaining genome integrity. When these pathways are defective, mutations accumulate, leading to tumor development. DDR-defective tumors are cancers associated with impaired DNA repair mechanisms, often linked to mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, ATM, CHEK2, PALB2, and related genes. Such defects are common in breast, ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic cancers, among others. Targeting DDR pathways has become one of the most exciting frontiers in oncology.
