GS Mark Testing and Certification For Furniture, From SGS

SGS is offering GS Mark testing and certification to furniture manufacturers. The GS Mark (it stands for “Geprüfte Sicherheit” and means “safety tested”) is a voluntary certification mark applicable to finished products including furniture.

Products bearing the GS Mark are compliant with the statutory safety requirements of the German Product Safety Act (ProdSG), which are more stringent than only the EN standard. SGS experts are able to assess furniture products for compliance with all of the statutory requirements of the ProdSG – including those addressing electrical and mechanical safety, chemical and hazardous materials, ergonomics and noise emissions.

SGS is now accredited by the German authorities to perform the necessary tests, certify compliance, and award the GS Mark.

The Process and Benefits of a GS Mark
To receive GS Mark certification, furniture manufacturers must undertake a product safety assessment and production line – or factory – audit. Manufacturers need to do this in two stages, taking (and passing) the product test first before then having the factory audit.

Furniture manufacturers, retailers and consumers across Europe see the GS Mark as a sign of quality, even though it covers only safety. That’s because there’s a perception that products with the Mark are more trustworthy than those without it.

SGS Global Coverage
As a notified body for GS Mark testing and certification, SGS-TÜV Saar GmbH in Sulzbach, Germany, performs tests on most types of furniture. This includes products for specialized applications, such as furniture for:
• Educational institutions
• Laboratories and workshops
• Commercial/retail environments
• Other special furniture categories

SGS Shanghai in China is approved for GS Mark testing on free-standing cabinets for kitch-ens, living areas and bathrooms, as well as for outdoor furniture, seating (including uphol-stered furniture) and tables, children’s furniture, and office furniture.

SGS’s global network of furniture labs can test for compliance with EU, US, international and local requirements. In Asia, the company has four labs in mainland China (including Shanghai) plus one in Hong Kong, Taiwan (Taipei) and Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City).

The company’s European labs are in France (Aix en Provence), Germany (Taunusstein) and the UK (Leicester). The Fairfield, New Jersey facility in the United States covers testing for the Americas.
