Tailings dewatering screens are an indispensable key piece of equipment in the tailings treatment process of mines. They are mainly used to dewater, deslim, and demedium the tailings generated after mineral processing. By reducing the water content in the tailings, the volume of the tailings is reduced, which facilitates subsequent storage, transportation, or resource utilization. At the same time, some water resources in the tailings can be recovered, realizing the recycling of water resources. They play an important role in improving the environmental protection level and resource utilization rate of mines.

Structure and Types

Depending on the particle size, moisture content, and treatment requirements of tailings, tailings dewatering screens have developed various structural forms. Common types include linear vibrating tailings dewatering screens, which have a linear vibration trajectory and uniform screen surface vibration. They are suitable for processing tailings with relatively coarse particle size and low mud content, and have high processing efficiency. There are also high-frequency vibrating tailings dewatering screens, which have a higher vibration frequency and can effectively overcome the stickiness of fine-particle tailings, promoting moisture separation. They are especially suitable for dewatering fine-particle, high-moisture-content tailings, resulting in tailings with even lower moisture content after dewatering. In addition, multi-layer screen tailings dewatering screens are used in some special scenarios. By using screens with different mesh sizes, tailings can be graded and dewatered, while separating tailings of different particle sizes, facilitating subsequent differentiated utilization.

Working Principle

To achieve efficient solid-liquid separation, tailings dewatering screens typically consist of core components such as a screen box, vibrating motor, screen mesh, shock absorber, and frame. During operation, the vibrating motor generates high-frequency vibrations and transmits the vibration energy to the screen box, causing the screen box to drive the screen mesh to vibrate regularly. When the tailings slurry is evenly distributed on the screen surface through the feeding device, under the action of vibration, the water and fine mud particles in the tailings will permeate downwards through the mesh of the screen mesh, enter the water receiving device below, and be collected and recovered. The tailings with significantly reduced water content will move forward along the inclined direction of the screen surface under the inertial force generated by the vibration of the screen surface, and finally be discharged from the discharge end of the screen box, completing the dewatering process. During this process, parameters such as the inclination angle of the screen surface, vibration frequency, and amplitude are adjusted according to the particle size distribution, water content, and processing capacity of the tailings to achieve the best dewatering effect.

Application

In actual mining operations, tailings dewatering screens are used in various tailings treatment processes for different types of minerals, including metallic and non-metallic mines. For example, in the beneficiation of metallic mines such as gold, copper, and iron, the moisture content of tailings can be reduced to about 15%-25% after dewatering. The dewatered tailings can be stored in dry stacks, which significantly reduces the construction and maintenance costs of tailings ponds compared to traditional wet tailings ponds, lowers the safety risks such as dam failures, and reduces pollution to surrounding land and water resources. In the tailings treatment of non-metallic mines such as coal and limestone, dewatering screens can also help recover fine-grained useful minerals from the tailings, such as recovering fine coal from coal slime tailings, thus improving the comprehensive utilization rate of resources. In addition, with the advancement of green mining construction, dewatered tailings are also widely used in the production of building blocks, roadbed fillers, and other building materials, realizing the resource recycling of tailings and reducing solid waste emissions.
