Mooring is defined as the process wherein an object is fastened or secured by means of cables or chains, either on land or sea. Mooring of offshore installations is an important operation to hold drilling equipment and ships intact in their vertical positions. Mooring inspection is an integral part of offshore and onshore maintenance programs. It is supported by a precise and detailed inspection process, which ensures safety and integrity of operations. The process primarily aims to identify defects that require immediate attention in a mooring system. Forces such as wave action, wind, current, tide, and swell can act on a vessel in sea. These forces can disturb the vessel’s position. Mooring helps counterbalance these forces by preventing the movement of the vessel. A basic mooring system includes wire rope, anchor chain, anchors, shackles, and swivel assemblies.

Mooring inspection helps detect the defects in mooring lines. These may include corrosion, fatigue, erosion and, mechanical overload. Rigorous monitoring and inspection techniques are needed to ensure system integrity during the entire lifespan of a mooring facility due to increased offshore exploration & production and activities around the world. Based on the type of inspection, the mooring inspection market can be segmented into water inspection, partial raising inspection, and shore inspection. Water inspection is carried out by divers without removing the mooring lines. Divers examine the anchors, chains, and ensure that shackle pins are not loose. Partial raising inspection is done by bringing the mooring component onboard a vessel for inspection. Shore inspection includes complete removal of the mooring line and bringing it onshore and examining it.

Based on techniques, the mooring inspection market can be divided into ultrasonic techniques for mooring chain inspection in water, close visual inspection (CVI), magnetic particle inspection (MPI), HD 3-D videos (HD3DV), 3-D modeling, optical chain measurement systems (CMS), subsea chain measurement caliper, rope measurement systems (RMS), and ROV based measurement. MPI testing is a major nondestructive testing method, which utilizes magnetic fields and magnetic particles to detect defects in mooring components such as connecting links, swivels, shackles, chasers, and hooks. The CVI technology employs modern techniques for subsea damage diagnostics, such as 3-D modeling and HD video inspection, and is often integrated with an ROV system. MPI and CVI can be employed in combination to detect surface cracks, corrosion, chain breaks, and distortion.

In terms of region, the global mooring inspection market can be segregated into North America, Asia Pacific, Latin America, Europe, and Middle East & Africa. The market of mooring inspection is predicted on the basis of offshore rigs operational in these regions. North America is expected to dominate the global mooring inspection market due to the presence of large number of operational rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.
