Oasis Orthodontics Notes Parents Often Miss Early Signs Of Orthodontic Problems
Many parents schedule their child's first orthodontic visit only after noticing visibly crooked teeth. Still, Dr. Khushee Sharma-Fung at Oasis Orthodontics says subtle problems often start years earlier. The practice sees children whose parents didn't realize certain behaviors or patterns signaled developing bite issues. By the time permanent teeth come in crooked, the underlying jaw relationship has already formed.
"Parents focus on whether teeth look straight," Dr. Sharma-Fung said. "We look at how the jaws fit together and whether there's adequate space for teeth to develop properly. Those problems exist before you can see them."
Dr. Sharma-Fung founded Oasis Orthodontics in 2010 and teaches at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry. She personally examines every patient at each appointment, tracking how young jaws and teeth develop over time.
The practice evaluates jaw relationships, facial proportions, and available space for emerging teeth. Some children need guidance while their bones are still growing. Others require monitoring until development reaches the right stage for treatment.
Oasis Orthodontics uses dentofacial orthopedics to guide jaw growth in younger patients. The Carriere Distalizer Appliance corrects specific bite problems. Traditional metal braces and Radiance clear braces address tooth positioning based on each case.
Treatment timing depends on the individual child. Dr. Sharma-Fung evaluates whether intervention should start immediately or whether waiting produces better outcomes. Each recommendation accounts for the child's growth pattern and specific condition.
The practice schedules appointments after school, evenings, and Saturdays at 48 Washington Street in Markham Village. Treatment takes place in private rooms where Dr. Sharma-Fung explains findings to parents and answers questions about their child's development.
Families from Markham, Unionville, Berczy Village, Cornell, Greensborough, Cachet, Wismer, Legacy, Cathedraltown, and Buttonville come to the practice for orthodontic evaluation and treatment.
Initial consultations include examination and discussion of whether the child needs treatment now or monitoring over time. Dr. Sharma-Fung provides parents with specific information about what she observes and what it means for their child's dental development.
Parents can schedule consultations by calling the practice or visiting the website.
