These resources are processed into lithium carbonate through chemical refining, with supply dynamics influenced by mining capacity, extraction technologies, and environmental regulations.
Downstream, lithium carbonate is indispensable for lithium-ion battery manufacturing, especially in cathode materials such as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistries, which are widely used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Beyond batteries, it is also consumed in glass and ceramics for improved durability, in lubricants, polymers, and pharmaceuticals for specialty applications, and in aluminum production as a flux. The rapid growth of EV adoption and grid-scale storage has shifted demand heavily toward the battery sector, making it the dominant driver of the lithium carbonate market today. At present, the single-line production capacity of 4,000 tons/year has been gradually eliminated, and the production capacity of new production lines will be above 10,000-20,000 tons/year.
