Job interview in transition: Personality beats qualifications alone
The German job market is still in a state of flux. Due to economic uncertainties and a reluctance to hire new staff, HR managers are talking about an employers' market: companies can choose from a large number of qualified applicants, while candidates are increasingly required to present their position precisely and convincingly. Specialist knowledge alone is less and less sufficient. The decisive factor is how clearly people communicate their professional identity and how confidently they present themselves in interviews."Anyone who knows their own strengths, knows how they come across to others and at the same time knows what working conditions they need to work well will be more convincing in a job interview," says Jessica Wahl, Senior Performance Coach and expert in communication and application strategies. She has observed for years that although applicants know their professional skills, they have difficulty getting to the heart of the matter. Especially in difficult economic times, applicants quickly feel that they have to adapt to every job advertisement - a mistake that often leads to uncertainty during the interview.
Companies, on the other hand, are paying more attention to fit, presence and personality. In addition to professional requirements, self-reflection, clear motivation and strong communication skills are becoming increasingly important. Particularly in industries that are currently restructuring or realigning their long-term strategies, employers need employees who provide orientation instead of looking for it.
For applicants, this means showing their profile instead of hiding. "Only those who are courageous and think bigger will take the next step," emphasizes Wahl. Being bold does not mean being loud, but being consistent, clear and credible. This also includes openly formulating career aspirations, knowing your limits and explaining your motivation for changing jobs in a comprehensible way.
Professional preparation is therefore a decisive career factor. The ability to convey complex professional experiences concisely, as well as simulations of real interview situations and work on body language and vocal effect, demonstrably increase the chances of success in the selection process. Application coaching can be the key to greater self-confidence, especially for candidates who have worked in the same company for a long time or who have to start again after restructuring.
In a working world that is changing faster than ever before, applicants have the rare opportunity to consciously rewrite their professional history. Those who clearly recognize their strengths and are prepared to step outside their usual boundaries not only win in the interview, but also in their self-image. The application process is thus transformed from a mandatory appointment into a personal assessment - and thus into a moment in which courage, clarity and attitude can achieve more than the perfect answer.
