Her mission takes her to the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation in northern Wisconsin, where the novel redefines the meaning of freedom. Decades earlier, the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) community made a radical choice: they unplugged from electricity, internet, and federal dependence. The results were profound--environmental recovery, cultural resurgence, and complete sovereignty. It became the last truly self-sufficient sanctuary on the continent.
Janet is tasked with interviewing "Old Woman" (Rachel Anderson), an elder activist whose memories of life before the current regime hold the key to the buried truth DHS is desperate to suppress. The narrative interweaves Janet's dangerous journey with Rachel's history--particularly her flight from government harassment in the 1990s, which ultimately led her to this community. The interview becomes more than a journalistic mission; it becomes a matter of survival.
