New analysis from passenger-rights platform AirHelp.co.uk shows that even the shortest domestic flights are now among the most disrupted routes in the UK, putting thousands of festive family reunions at risk this Christmas.

While most headlines focus on long-haul chaos, AirHelp's data uncovers a lesser-known festive pinch point: UK-to-UK flights are being hit by some of the worst disruption in the country, with several key routes suffering delay or cancellation rates of over 50% last Christmas.
The worst-affected domestic routes (Dec 21 - Jan 5 based on 2024/25 data)
Guernsey → Gatwick: 60% disrupted
Edinburgh → Gatwick: 60% disrupted
Edinburgh → Birmingham: 56% disrupted
AirHelp warns this trend is likely to continue as airlines face winter weather, congested schedules, and ongoing staffing challenges, meaning even a 'quick hop' home could leave travellers stranded, rerouted, or missing Christmas celebrations entirely.
A spokesperson from Airhelp reveals "Passengers should know their rights: if your flight is delayed or cancelled, you may be entitled to compensation under UK/EU law. Many travellers still don't realise they could claim hundreds of pounds back."

Why it matters for your readers:
Families travelling within the UK for Christmas are at higher risk than they think.
Domestic delays often result in missed connections, unused hotel bookings, and ruined festive plans.
Many passengers don't claim compensation they're legally owed, despite disruption rising year on year.
