What are DEEs?
Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) are a group of rare, severe, early-onset epilepsies in which epileptic activity itself contributes to progressive cognitive, motor and behavioural impairment. They include syndromes such as infantile epileptic spasms (West syndrome), Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), Dravet syndrome (DS), epilepsy with myoclonic-atonic seizures (EMAS/Doose), CDKL5 deficiency and many single-gene epilepsies.
Children often present in the first months or years of life with multiple seizure types, resistant to standard antiseizure medicines, and long-term disability is common.

Global patient pool - high-level view
Incidence and prevalence
• A large population-based study estimated cumulative incidence of DEE at 169 per 100,000 children (≈1 in 590), while the broader group of epilepsy with developmental impairment (DEE + ID+E) reached 294 per 100,000 children.
• Point prevalence data from the same programme show 175 per 100,000 children with epilepsy plus developmental impairment, of which 112 per 100,000 were classified as DEEs.
• Recent work on single-gene epilepsies (many of which present as DEEs) suggests an incidence of about 1 per 2,120 live births (47.2 per 100,000) in one large national cohort.

Together, these named DEEs plus gene-defined DEEs (SCN1A+, CDKL5, STXBP1, KCNQ2, etc.) make up the core "addressable" DEE therapy population that payers, regulators, and sponsors typically model.
