Holocaust survivor shares courageous story in St. Petersburg,

On Nov 20th, the Chabad Jewish Center of St. Petersburg hosted an emotionally powerful evening with Holocaust survivor Sora Vigorito at the Palladium Theater. Attendees sat immersed in the theater as Sora shared her deeply personal and harrowing story of survival through horrific torture from Dr. Josef Mengele at Auschwitz.

Sora entered Auschwitz as a three-year-old child, where she endured torture and medical abuse at the hands of Dr. Mengele. Her sister Chana was murdered before her eyes-a trauma that shaped the rest of her life.

The theater was silent and deeply engaged throughout her testimony. The mood shifted from heartbreak to awe as Sora described not only the horrors of Auschwitz, but also the extraordinary effort it took to rediscover joy, purpose, and Jewish identity after the war.

Despite the unfathomable suffering she experienced, Sora later rebuilt her connection to Judaism through years of inner work, healing, and a meaningful relationship with the Lubavitcher Rebbe. She ultimately reclaimed her faith and identity, built a new life, and went on to become a psychologist, helping others through their pain.

During the event, she took questions and welcomed even the most difficult questions with honesty and strength.

"Even after unimaginable trauma, she found joy and purpose. Her life is a lesson in perseverance, healing, and living with meaning," says Rabbi Alter Korf, the executive director of Chabad SP.
