Photodiodes are used in stationary devices, and mobile devices use the imaging sensor due to the larger field of vision. However, image sensor operations are slow and consume more energy. Hence, it is a challenge to design the receiver that offers strength to device movements and FOV misalignments. The receiver should operate while consuming a minimum amount of energy to be useful on battery-powered mobile devices and to provide high-speed VLC.

It uses visible light between 400 THz and 800 THz, with achievable data rates reaching 100 Mbps. It may be used as an individual solution, along with cellular network communication or radio-frequency. This technology is a faster and cheaper optical version of Wi-Fi.
