This will allow wireless optical communication between phones, computers, sensors, and other indoor devices such as office and household applications. According to the report, one driver in market is availability of greater bandwidth. With an enhanced lighting technology, VLC will offer a much greater bandwidth. The illumination LEDs that are currently in use are designed to be of low bandwidth, as they are supposed to deliver a constant illumination at high power. Nevertheless, the sector is moving toward RGB, where each individual channel has a higher bandwidth. One can also add several different colors to multiplex that is over different channels. For instance, laser LEDs are incorporated in BMW i8 headlights to have a very long range communication, and these have even higher bandwidths.The bandwidth frequency spectrum offered by visible light is larger than that offered by RF bandwidth. VLC bandwidth ranges from 400 THz to 800 THz, and RF frequency offers a bandwidth range from 3 kHz to 300 GHz.

Further, the report states that one challenge in market is design limitations. The receivers use an imaging sensor or photodiode for receiving signals. Photodiodes are used in stationary devices, and mobile devices use the imaging sensor due to the larger field of vision. However, image sensor operations are slow and consume more energy. This affects the overall data rate as the imaging sensor is designed for capturing images and videos and not for communication. Hence, it is a challenge to design the receiver that offers strength to device movements and FOV misalignments. The receiver should operate while consuming a minimum amount of energy to be useful on battery-powered mobile devices and to provide high-speed VLC.

About Visible Light Communication

VLC is a wireless technology that uses light emanated from LED bulbs in order to provide a network for high-speed communication parallel to Wi-Fi. Thus, it is also referred to as Li-Fi. Visible light spectrum is 10,000 times larger than radio frequency spectrum, and it is considered as an answer to the bandwidth limitations of radio frequency. It uses visible light between 400 THz and 800 THz, with achievable data rates reaching 100 Mbps. It may be used as an individual solution, along with cellular network communication or radio-frequency. This technology is a faster and cheaper optical version of Wi-Fi.
