Press release from: Driversnote

Share of registered electric and hybrid cars in NZ grew from 7% in 2022 to 15% in 2025

Share of registered electric and hybrid cars in NZ grew from 7% in 2022 to 15% in 2025

The data may reflect a rising environmental focus as businesses prepare for potential tax changes.

Driversnote, a leading global mileage tracking solution for businesses and employees, announced today that the number of hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) registered by its New Zealand customers has doubled over the past year. The growth underscores a substantial shift towards sustainable transport options, even amid changing incentive policies.

"EV registrations on our platform have more than doubled from 7% to 15%, showing how quickly New Zealanders are moving towards cleaner transport," said Martin Poulsen, CEO and co-founder of Driversnote.

"With transport making up nearly half of the country's carbon emissions, as Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) announced, businesses and employees are taking action - and we're here to help them track and reimburse every work kilometre with confidence."

EV Adoption Rising Despite Policy Shifts
New Zealand recently surpassed 126,000 registered hybrid and EVs nationwide, marking a milestone in the country's transition to low-emission vehicles. While removing the Clean Car Discount at the end of 2023 and introducing Road User Charges (RUC) in 2024 initially slowed sales down, environmental drivers continue to encourage EV uptake in private and corporate fleets.

Momentum could grow as Parliament considers the Income Tax (Clean Transport FBT Exclusion) Amendment Bill. If passed, it would temporarily exempt EVs from Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT), making it cheaper for businesses to provide or reimburse employees for driving electric vehicles.

Driversnote Expands Support for EV and Hybrid Fleets Amid Growing Demand
Driversnote is a global platform for mileage tracking used by businesses and individuals. While the company is currently exploring new features to support hybrid and EV owners even better, it already offers features such as:
- Tracking mileage consistently across vehicle types. Ability to auto-track and track with our iBeacon for increased accuracy and less admin.
- Allowing custom rates that can reflect EV-specific policies.
- Providing tax-compliant, auditable reports to back up policy enforcement.

With Driversnote Teams, you can collect additional data (such as vehicle type, custom rates, notes, and odometer readings) to tailor reporting for EV drivers.

"We get a lot of requests from customers reflecting the transition to electric and the desire to cut back on emissions. Including the ability to track emissions and expenses for at-home charging," adds Martin Poulsen, CEO & co-founder at Driversnote.

"This is actually something we see globally, and at Driversnote, we understand the need companies have to stay compliant while supporting employees in the transition to electric."

With environmental goals high on the national agenda and businesses under pressure to cut fleet emissions, the doubling of EV registrations in Driversnote reflects a wider readiness to embrace change.

As more organisations encourage their employees to drive EVs, Driversnote provides the infrastructure to ensure those choices are sustainable - both environmentally and financially.
