Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) photonic chips leverage LiNbO3's large Pockels effect (r33 ≈ 31 pm/V) to achieve highly efficient electro-optic modulation with RF-optical velocity matching; commercial devices now exceed 110 GHz bandwidth at low Vπ and insertion loss. Key applications include high-speed data-center/coherent modulators, frequency combs and nonlinear conversion, acousto-optic components, quantum photonics, and microwave-to-optical transduction.
