Growth Factors in the Telecom Cloud Industry:

● Mass-Scale 5G Network Deployments

The single biggest driver for the telecom cloud market is the move to 5G where networks will no longer be hardware based and silo-ed but will be a single, unified, cloud-based core network. Ultra-LOW latency, massive scale of connectivity and HIGH throughput can only be delivered with a cloud-native core. As an example, a wide variety of fixed broadband service providers have launched commercial 5G-based services (more than 90 as per one report), and even hundreds of commercial 5G networks. The large-scale deployment of 5G requires CSPs to have improved utilization of NFV and Cloud Computing for vRAN, vEPC, SD-WAN, Routing and Transport. By deploying cloud, operators can achieve scalability and agility to handle rapidly growing volumes of data traffic and to support new and more advanced 5G use cases.

● Focus on Operational and Capital Expenditure Reduction

Telecom operators have high operational and capital expenditures to maintain a complex, hardware-based network. Virtualization onto a common, scalable, and flexible cloud infrastructure is a prime economic driver as it reduces the need for proprietary hardware; and it lowers costs associated with powering, cooling, and maintaining the large data centers that host the legacy network infrastructure. Quantitative evidence that this tradeoff is worthwhile also exists. One study of telecom executives found that the huge majority of them found their cloud migrations to be very or extremely effective at achieving cost savings. Network automation and resource allocation convert fixed costs into variable costs that are related to demand, which is helpful to the financial results and market position of a CSP.

● Surging Demand for Edge Computing and New Enterprise Services

The expansion of low-latency cloud applications, and the more generalized trend around digital transformation in many different industries, has placed increased demand on cloud services at the edge, or as close to the end user as possible. Services like Internet of Things (IoT), industrial automation and smart cities have very low latency requirements. This demand has driven CSPs' efforts to partner with major cloud providers and place cloud infrastructure at the central offices and mobile switching centers of telcos to reach edge applications faster, leveraging the geographic reach of the telecom network. This creates more business opportunities for CSPs to offer enterprise customers tailored high-value cloud services and private 5G services.

Three Key Trends in the Global Telecom Cloud Market

● Cloud-Native Network Functions (CNFs) and Containerization

An overarching trend is the move from VNFs based on hypervisor technology to CNFs based on container technology like Kubernetes. This is a large step forward in network performance, agility and reliability. For example, CNFs use a microservices architecture, allowing operators to scale and upgrade individual network functions (for example, a firewall or load balancer) dynamically rather than managing multiple virtual machines, as is done with VNFs, which dramatically reduces deployment times. According to some reports, most telecom executives are convinced that CNFs microservices are needed to support the diverse requirements of 5G applications. This is leading to ultra-flexible, open-source driven networks that can be orchestrated across hybrid multi-cloud environments.

● Hybrid and Multi-Cloud Adoption Strategies

Telecom operators are increasingly deploying hybrid and multi-cloud architectures to balance the demands of security, data sovereignty and cost. A hybrid cloud is used when the private network cloud of a telco is combined with one or more public clouds. This lets organizations keep sensitive network workloads in-house while retaining the ability to run their IT or non-mission critical workloads on the larger public cloud. Data shows the majority of multi-cloud companies use a hybrid cloud approach. For example, a large European telecom servicing company is using public cloud infrastructure for its internal IT and customer-facing services while also utilizing a private cloud for its core network functions. It offers improved resource utilization, geographic redundancy, avoidance of supplier lock-in, and helps suppliers to comply with various regulatory requirements.

● AI and Automation in Network Operations (AIOps)

The hundreds of virtualized functions in such cloud-based networks have made AIOps (Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations) a hot emerging trend in managing and automating the operations of such networks. AIOps platforms leverage machine learning to analyze large volumes of operation data (network logs, performance metrics and application-level data) to detect issues before they occur and automate problem resolution. For example, if a telecoms company has an AI driven system, it could use the traffic anomaly in a geographic area to automatically route data traffic around the problem, or to provision/release cloud resources on-demand, avoiding degradation in service to its customers. This will enable carriers to offer and meet strict SLAs on 5G-enabled critical services, and is a major area of investment for telecoms companies to improve service while controlling costs.
