It is soluble in dilute acids and alkalis, relatively stable in alkaline solutions, and decomposes in strong acids. It is slightly soluble in ethanol and insoluble in chloroform and ether. It is an essential amino acid for human and animal life, playing a vital role in growth, development, and metabolism. It is considered the second essential amino acid and is widely used in medicine, food, and feed.

Because L-tryptophan is an amino acid that is relatively scarce in some plant proteins, its use in food fortification and as a feed additive plays a crucial role in improving the utilization of plant protein. It is the third most commonly added amino acid in feed, after methionine and lysine. As a feed additive, it promotes feeding, reduces stress responses, improves sleep, increases antibodies in fetuses and young animals, enhances lactation in dairy animals, reduces the amount of high-quality protein in the diet, and reduces feed costs. The production of L-tryptophan initially relied mainly on chemical synthesis and protein hydrolysis, but with the continuous advancement of science and technology, the microbial method of producing L-tryptophan has become practical and dominant.
