Microfluidics is the branch of science and engineering that deals with the behavior, precise control, and manipulation of fluids that are geometrically constrained to small (typically sub-millimeter) scales. It involves the design and fabrication of devices containing tiny channels through which small volumes of liquids or gases flow. The technology allows for rapid mixing, reaction, separation, and detection of biological or chemical samples using minimal reagents and time. Microfluidic systems-often referred to as lab-on-a-chip devices-combine multiple laboratory processes such as sample preparation, analysis, and detection onto a single miniaturized platform. They find applications in fields like medical diagnostics, drug discovery, genomics, environmental testing, and chemical synthesis, offering advantages such as portability, cost-efficiency, and high precision.
