Detailed Application Scenario

In this project, Chevron used Innospec's diesel fuel nitrogen oxide scavenger to reduce NOx formation during combustion in marine engines and refinery boilers. The additive reacts with nitrogen oxides and unstable intermediates, helping convert them into harmless nitrogen and water. This enhanced the engine's thermal efficiency and reduced the need for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) units in certain operations.

The scavenger was blended directly into diesel fuel at low dosage rates to improve emissions performance while maintaining fuel stability and lubricity. It was particularly effective in marine vessels and stationary engines operating under variable load conditions.

Chevron selected this product because of its compliance with IMO Tier III emission standards and EPA marine engine regulations, along with its compatibility with existing refinery blending systems. It also contributed to operational cost savings by minimizing catalyst fouling and extending maintenance intervals.

Alternative solutions such as ammonia-based SCR or EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems were evaluated but found less efficient in certain applications due to complexity and higher installation costs. Therefore, nitrogen oxide scavengers provided a more flexible, low-cost chemical solution for emission control in heavy-duty fuel systems.
