A cathode block is a refractory carbon block used as the lining material at the bottom of aluminum electrolysis cells (Hall-Héroult cells). It serves as the cathode during the electrolytic reduction of alumina (Al2O3) into primary aluminum metal. In 2024, global Cathode Block production reached approximately 614 K MT, with an average global market price of around US$ 1968 per MT.

Cathode blocks are high-temperature resistant carbon blocks used as lining materials in the electrolytic cells of aluminum smelters. They serve as the conductive bottom layer of reduction cells, carrying electric current while withstanding intense chemical and thermal stresses during the Hall-Héroult process. Cathode blocks are manufactured using high-quality raw materials such as calcined anthracite, graphite, petroleum coke, and coal tar pitch, which are processed under high pressure and temperature to achieve excellent electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, and mechanical strength. The global production capacity is approximately 1,120,000 tons, with gross profit margins of 9%-22%. Common single-line production capacities are in the 3,000-5,000 ton range.

The industry chain begins upstream with raw material suppliers of anthracite, petroleum coke, pitch, and graphite. These are calcined, crushed, mixed with binders, and then molded, baked, and graphitized to form cathode blocks. In the midstream, specialized refractory and carbon producers refine and machine the blocks to precise specifications, ensuring compatibility with modern smelting cell designs. Downstream, the primary consumer base is the aluminum industry, where cathode blocks are critical consumables for large-scale electrolytic reduction plants. Because smelters typically operate continuously for years, cathode quality directly influences energy efficiency, cell life, and overall production costs, making supplier relationships and product reliability strategically important.
