Binder Jetting/3DP (hereinafter referred to as BJ) is a high-efficiency and low-cost "line scan" 3D printing technology. It was born at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States as early as 1993. The industry chain is longer, and the development process of BJ technology obviously lags behind the laser 3D printing technology based on "point scanning", but with the advantages of efficiency and cost, BJ technology has a strong stamina. In recent years, with a series of technological breakthroughs in the field of BJ, especially the successful development of BJ metal, it has once again attracted widespread attention in the industry, which is called "Additive 2.0" technology. The origins of metal binder jetting can be traced back to 1993, when the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) developed an inkjet-based process that used metal powders to create 3D objects. Manufacturing company Extrude Hone Corporation licensed the MIT technology exclusively in 1996.
The company has since developed and commercialized a metal binder jetting system, and the first 3D printer, the ProMetal RTS-300, was delivered to Motorola in 1999. ExOne was spun off from Extrude Hone Corporation in 2005 and until the early 2010s remained the only company offering metal binder jetting services and systems. At that point, early MIT patents on the technology began to expire, allowing new companies to enter the market. The 2010s marked a new era in metal binder jetting. From start-ups to more established players, many companies are actively seeking to break through the possibilities of current metal-bonded jetting technology. ExOne is one of the oldest players in metal binder jetting.
Global key players of binder jetting technology include ExOne, Desktop Metal, 3D Systems, etc. The top three players hold a share about 64%. North America is the largest producer, has a share about 67%, followed by Europe and China, with share 19% and 6%, respectively.
